The Tularosa Basin of south-central New Mexico has been the focus of a pilot data-compilation project relating to the Basin's ecosystem history. The Tularosa Basin Ecosystems database was designed to aid land managers and environmental specialists who need time-depth information for planning and decision making. Project lead/sponsors are White Sands Missile Range, NM; Bureau of Land Management-Las Cruces, NM; and U.S. Army Environmental Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.
Archaeological, historic, and paleoclimatic data were included for the time
span from 20,000 years ago to the present. Data were compiled from extant
reports, articles, and books, as well as electronic, and photographic media.
The database is portable and linked with query or context-searching software
capabilities. Project participants have tested the prototype database package.
Their assessments have guided revisions of the prototype and future versions
of the ecosystem database. Resolution of key land-management issues were attempted
through prototype applications of the data.
