New windscreen for 'Slick' - January 14, 2002

We really believe the stock windscreen for the SLK was very effective but it made it very hard to see out the rearview mirror, especially at night.

So we decided to make one out of plexiglass.

Below are the instructions on how we made the windscreen.

Used a piece of cardboard for a template. Held the cardboard against the rollbar and traced around the rollbar for overall height and length (7.75" H x 41.5" L). Location was then marked for the slots for the velcro straps.

The rollbar circumference was measured to determine the length of the velcro straps to be used. A total of six straps 2" wide by 11" long were used. Each strap consisted of a 6.5" piece of hook and a 6.5" of loop. The two pieces were overlapped 2" and then sewn together.

After checking the template for fit, we transferred the markings from the cardboard template onto the 1/8" plexiglass. Used a router to cut out the windscreen and the slots. Sanded and smoothed the edges.

After removing the plexiglass protective paper, added MBCA decals (of course, this is optional) and secured the plexiglass windscreen with the velcro straps.

Installation finished!

Now we'll have to take the car for a ride to see how it works.
