Nike Hercules Missile

The Nike Hercules is a surface to air missle. The missle was fully operational in 1958. It stands 39 feet tall and 31 1/2 inches in diameter. The range was 75 nautical miles at speeds more than Mach 1, carrying a nuclear or high explosive warhead. The Nike Hercules Systems were deployed around major cities and strategic areas throughout the United States. The Hercules and its predecessor, the Nike Ajax, were deployed in Alaska, California, Conneticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. In addition, Nike systems were deployed in the foreign countries of Denmark, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Norway, Taiwan, and Turkey by the United States and its allies.
