MMU - Manned Maneuvering Unit
For moving around in space the astronauts use a jet-propelled
backpack called the MMU or Manned Maneuvering Unit. It is a kind of flying chair,
propelled by sets of 24 tiny thrusters, which spurt out jets of compressed nitrogen
gas. On February 3, 1984 Bruce McCandless made the first space walk with the MMU
300 ft. away from the Challenger. |
