MP3 WAV Information Page
I've decided to sample all new sounds in MP3 WAV format. This page should get you started and answer some of your questions about this change.
First things first... if your computer can't play MP3 encoded WAVs like this one, then you will need to install the Microsoft Netshow player, which updates your computer and allows these sounds to be played like normal WAV files.
I've made it easy for you. You can download the
freeware Newshow player right from my site..
just click HERE. (1.75 MB)
After you've downloaded the NSPLAY.EXE file, simply double click it and as Pearl would say, "Viola!".. it installs and you can now hear these lovely new sounds!
Now to answer some questions, and a comparison of the sound qualities.....
1. What is an MP3 WAV, anyway?
It's an audio compression system that
allows sound files to be reduced to nearly 1/12 of their regular size without any
peceptible loss of sound quality. MP3 stands for MPEG Layer 3 audio, and is a
descendant of the compression used in DVD video and DSS satellite systems.
2. Why did you switch to MP3 WAVs?
Well for one, they are smaller. Since
my Internet Service Provider has been extremely generous in letting me hog their disk
space with MST sounds, I thought I would try to minimize the size of my growing
collection. This also speeds download times! More importantly, the sound quality is
much better with MP3... scroll down to see the comparison I have set up.
3. Can I still use these sounds for system sounds?
Absolutely. MP3 WAVs can be used for
system sounds just like other WAVs could. You can still have Tom or Crow make a
snide remark every time you empty the recycle bin, or there is a program error, etc.
4. Where can I find out more about this junk?
For starters, you can go to www.mpeg.org or to www.mp3.com. These sites are fairly complex
for newcomers, so you can just jump in and see what you find, or you can email me with
other questions you may have.
5. SO PROVE IT! Why are MP3 WAVs so much better?
Here ya go... a head to head
comparison; the same sound in both old and new format. Note that you may need to
install the Netshow Player first if your computer can't play MP3 WAVs (See top of page)
| In this corner! The PCM WAV! (Windows' standard format WAV format) PCM WAV (61Kb) |
And in this corner! The newcomer, MP3 WAV! (MPEG I Layer 3 audio
compression) MP3 WAV (44Kb) |
And in a Technical Knockout, it's MP3 by a landslide!
Okay enough about this stuff... you're ready for the
new sounds! But if you do have any comments
or suggestions, please email
me and we'll talk about it!!
