The Jersey Western Railroad Co. is a HO Scale Miniature Railroad that models a connecting line between the two powerhouse railroads of the Southwest. This connection also allows both the Southern Pacific and the Santa Fe (BNSF) to benefit from the switching that the Jersey Western can provide at each of its ends. The 2000 era layout features a variety of scenery between the SP connection at Carrizozo, New Mexico and the SF connection at Mountainair, New Mexico. Scenery ranges from the high desert in New Mexico after the yearly monsoon season (late August) to typical Southwest mountain scenery in the New Mexican Chupadera Mountains.

The Jersey Western is a free-lanced rail line that allows a convenient method for the interchange of traffic between the SP, on their Tucumcari Line, and the SF mainline that crosses New Mexico. The traffic on the layout includes trains from both the class one railroads and the JWRR. The JWRR traffic results from switching and blocking setouts from both class 1s. The SP connects with the Jersey Western in the JWRR's Tortilla Flats Yard in Carrizozo at the SP's Corn Junction. On the other end of the line, the Santa Fe exchanges cars in JWRR's Tilford Yard in Mountainair. Tilford Yard is on the northern end of the JWRR.

A majority of the traffic seen is Jersey Western intermodal, grain and freight trains. However, more and more SP and Santa Fe trains can be seen using the JWRR trackage. Take a look at our track plans to see the variety of routes we have on the layout. This extra through traffic is a bonus to the JWRR, as switching capacity of the yards is generally being used fully. Both types of business have all but eliminated the cumbersome and steep interchange between the two class 1s at Vaughn, New Mexico.

All JWRR locomotives were purchased used, and some are being repainted in a JWRR desert scheme. The remaining units still show their last owners' schemes. Power from the big roads, in the form of Dash 8s and 9s, is beginning to be seen on the JWRR trackage. The Jersey Western layout is powered and controlled using a DCC system.
