SCRIMSHAW ARTIST
Paul Wenzel has devoted over 20 years to perfecting his scrimshaw "the Whalers' art". It has been called the only original American folk art, excluding Native American crafts. Pauls personal expressions are intimate and concentrated in a small space.
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Paul's subject matter is of historical interest or wildlife; birds of prey his favorite study. The scrimshaw artworks are standing pieces, as well as decorated objects powder horns, knife handles, and jewelry.
PROCESS
Paul uses a painstaking stipple (dotted) technique. He delicately creates an image with a tool that puts needlepoint-fine holes into fossilized ivory. Paul etches only on legal ancient ivory. He then applies a layer of ink which is absorbed into the dots and produces a permanent image.
MOUNTING
The finished artwork is made into a standing piece; mounted on an individually crafted base. Bases are of walnut, bronze & walnut, or marble.
