The majority work to make a living;
some work to acquire wealth or fame,
while a few work because there is something within
them which demands expression....Only a few truly
love it.

Technical Writing Employment Databases Return
to Top
Purpose
The following section lists various employment databases available
on the Internet, as well as information on NMSUs Placement and
Career Services Office. The Internet resources were chosen because
of their relevancy to a technical writing career. This list is by
no means comprehensive, it is merely a sampling of the databases provided
over the Internet. This listing is a good place to start but keep
in mind there are many other databases in which to look. The following
document is broken into two segments: Internet and NMSU resources.
The Internet section first lists the database address followed by
a brief explanation of the database. The NMSU section describes the
Placement office located in Garcia Annex and provides their web address
and phone number.
A. Careershop
is a premier job site for computer professionals offering technology
jobs, resume posting, job searching and career resources. They have
databases in the following regions: New England, Mid Atlantic, Carolinas
and San Francisco Bay.
1. Dice
This database provides an extensive list of some of the more advanced
technical writing jobs. Most of the jobs found in this database are
located in the Silicon Valley of California, and thus, the jobs are
mostly for software documentation.
2. STC
The Society of Technical Communication (STC) maintains many web sites
each with a different job bank. All of the sites can be accessed through
the above address.
3. American
Job Bank
This is the American Job Bank. This is a very extensive job bank that
contains the most jobs. However, this site is not specific to Technical
Writing as the STC site is, but does include quite a comprehensive
list.
5. Career
Builder
This site uses national newspaper ads to locate jobs. After the user
selects the newspaper, job description, and date of publication, the
database will then search for relevant matches.
6. Monster
This job bank provides the user with a query box to input keywords
for employment searches. Many of the jobs offered are for computer
documentation and programming.
NMSU Employment
Employment opportunities are available through the NMSU Placement
and Career Services Office located in Garcia Annex. Once a students
file is processed, the student can interview with employers. The problem
is that very few employers, other than IBM, come to NMSU seeking technical
writing students. However, there are many other employers seeking
english majors for various careers. The phone number is (505) 646-1631.
