Creating a Web site for the Classroom

with Michael Dougherty - STC Webmaster

When I was teaching, I came across writings by J.N. Hook regarding the instruction of English. This one passage, in particular, stood out and I think it's applicable to any field of education.

"What is more important than public attitudes is that we English teachers will have come to realize that it lies within our power to help many or most of our students to live better informed, more aware, more thoughtful, more sympathetic and emphatic, fuller lives than they would have if we had never existed."

I wanted to share this because it is something to keep in the forefront when developing an interactive tool to energize the minds of students. One goal of an interactive web site for the classroom should be to help students further their critical thinking skills. Unfortunately, "critical thinking" has been reduced to a catch-phrase. With an effective web site however, students can be challenged and taken in directions they had not previously considered.

You may have heard, or be familiar with, such terms as Flash, Video Streaming, CGI, Java, or XML. These are all tools you can use to enhance your web site. There are links within this site to tutorials on these topics. We begin the focus on substance. Please click the Getting Started link below.
