Two Smith families, which I call the Willis Smith and William Isham Smith clans, originated
perhaps in the Carolinas, are noted in Mississippi, and many migrated to Louisiana. Commonly, there was
intermarrying between these two clans and with other kindred families. From Louisiana a
number of families migrated to Texas, probably along the Old San Antonio road (OSR) to the
general Houston County area. From that general area, they settled in other counties in East Texas.
Isham Anderson Smith was the son of
William Isham Smith, and brother to my great-grandmother Maranda Amanda Smith,
who married Pleasant S. Smith of the Willis Smith clan. The "Anderson" Smith family settled in the
Rabbit Hill area of Freestone County.
Isham Anderson and Lucy C. Stubbs Smith had thirteen children and six are known to be buried in Wortham Cemetery,
and these are identified with their birth order number.
Some pictures of kindred graves are also shown. |
