Special to The Chronicle

Conroe, Oct. 17. --- T. P. Johnson, who was 92 Friday, will celebrate Sunday with a birthday party at the home of his grandson, Charles McDonald, near whom he lives in the Egypt community between Conroe and Magnolia.

He does not know how many of the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be there, but probably not as many as usual at the annual affair -- because this war has things broken up too much, he says.

"People tell me 92 years is along time to live," he says, "but it does not seem so long to me. But now I have rheumatism in my legs and have a hard time getting around," is the way he sums up his age.

County's Oldest

Mr Johnson is believed to be the oldest man in Montgomery County.

Born at Mound Creek, south of Keenan, about six miles from his present home, he is proud of having lived in Montgomery County all his life.

#1232 Vernon Scott Johnson

DR. V. SCOTT JOHNSON

Vernon Scott Johnson was born in Dublin, Texas, April 15, 1901. His mother was Effie Parrack Johnson and his father was Peter William Johnson. Peter William died November 16, 1900 before Scott was born in April 1901. His mother went to Dublin where her parents, Rev. John Bolen Parrack and Rebecca Landis Parrack, lived. After Scott was born, he lived with these grandparents until he was school age, and then went to Eastland until 1911 when he and his mother, Effie, moved to Spur where she taught in the schools. Scott graduated from Spur High School in 1917 and entered Simmons College in Abilene, Texas where he would go to school, drop out and work, and return to school, graduating from Simmons in 1923. He graduated from Baylor Medical School in 1929. He interned at Missouri Baptist Hospital in Saint Louis where he met Lucille Lampp. Upon completion of his internship, he moved to Farwell, Texas and opened his office in August, 1930.

Lucille Lampp graduated from nursing school in May, 1930 and in November came to Farwell to work as a nurse for Scott. They were married in May, 1931.

In 1945 they moved ten miles west to Clovis, New Mexico and resided on Gidding Street for twenty years, then moved to their present address, 310 John Doe, Clovis. They were the parents of three children: Marcia Johnson Cole, Nancy Johnson Currier, and Dr. V. Scott Johnson II. They have nine grandchildren.

"Doc" has an easily identifiable, raspy voice. Having been heard once, it is never forgotten. Sometimes his conversation may be garnished with expletives (for emphasis) but at the same time toned down by the very nature of his characteristic gentleness and caring. When "Doc" talks, both the old and the young are captivated. The old — because they have shared in the virgin years of this era and are, themselves, a part of his stories — and the young — because of their natural interest in learning how things were with their parents in the early days.

The Johnsons have played a vital role in medical and hospital advances and in education and counseling of both parents and youth as well as being active in their church work and Bible study groups.

Dr. Johnson was an early member of the American Academy of General Practice, which later became the Academy of Family Practice. His medical practice, largely obstetrical, was continued until 1971, when he stopped surgery and obstetrics and did largely allergies and dermatology.

The Johnsons are typical of the people who settled in this area in the twenties and thirties, with no fear of hard work and no illusions about doctor, nurse professions being easy. They worked through the depression years caring for people with little hope of being paid (office calls, fifty cents), yet the attitude of love and service formed then became and remain a way of life to them. They have been blessed with the wisdom learned during hard times and with the outspoken honesty of those who are sure of their values. They are both respected and perhaps more important, respectable, and in their own way are exemplary of what American life was, and is all about in the era from 1930 to the present 1985.

Scott "retired" from his practice in July, 1982, but he still keeps his old Saturday Evening Post and Ladies Home Journal bag from which he used to sell papers in Spur when he was a small boy.

On August 17, 1985, Dr. and Mrs. Johnson were honored with a reception in Clovis celebrating fifty years of medical service to the Eastern New Mexico/West Texas area.
