LAS CRUCES PLACEMENT SITES; Peace Lutheran Church Elementary After School Program: is a new placement for 2006-07. The volunteer will develop a new after school program in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The volunteer will work with a committee to develop program goals, develop contact with neighborhood schools, determine program needs, personnel and material. Also the volunteer will recruit community volunteers to operate the program and also provide publicity for the start-up of the program. The complete scope of the job will be determined at a later date. Individual filling this position needs to be self directed, operating in a general frame-work, but primarily working independently. Would share office space with the BSC director until an office is established in the church. This position would be an Americorp Education Award placement, but on a limited bases, 900 hrs.or $2100.00 Website : Peace Lutheran Church Jardín de los Niños:
is a private, nonprofit, nondenominational child care
center in Las Cruces, New Mexico, designed to meet the special needs of homeless
infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. The BSC volunteer at Jardín serves as an
Assistant Toddler Teacher. Education, training, and/or work experience in the
early childhood field is highly desirable. This position meets requirements
for participation in the AmeriCorps Educational Award Program. Mesilla Valley Habitat for Humanity (MVHFH): is one of over 1400 national affiliates
of Habitat for Humanity International, a Christian ministry of volunteers from
all faiths who build homes in partnership with low income, working class families. MVHFH has completed
51 homes in the Las Cruces area since 1987. The BSC volunteer
at MVHFH serves as the Assistant to the Executive Director, helping as a worksite
supervisor, volunteer coordinator, and family liaison. Working knowledge of
the Spanish language, although not required, is highly desirable. This position
meets requirements for participation in the AmeriCorps Educational Award Program. La Casa, Inc.: is an organization in Las Cruces dedicated to the empowerment
of battered women and their children. La Casa provides shelter, counseling,
education on domestic violence, and advocacy in a supportive environment. La
Casa also teaches alternatives to violence in relationships, to battered women,
their children and perpetrators of abuse. The BSC volunteer at La Casa serves
as a Child and Adult Educational Specialist, working with children, victims
and perpetrators to help meet their educational needs. Ability to communicate
in Spanish and English strongly preferred. This position meets requirements
for participation in the AmeriCorps Educational Award Program. Colonias Development Council (CDC):
organization is based in Las
Cruces and serves southern Dona Ana county from the Mexico/ United States Border
to 30 miles north of Las Cruces. The CDC works in underdeveloped communities in
the area. The CDC focuses in five areas; Community development, Human and Civil
Rights, Economic Development, Youth Organizing and Environmental Issues.
Volunteer will work with groups in colonias communities helping with the
development of projects to support child care, economic growth and migrant
issues. The volunteer needs to be flexible, able to handle multi-task
situations. Spanish speaking skills strongly recommended. This placement meets
the requirements for participation in the AmeriCorps Educational Award Program.
EL PASO/JUÁREZ PLACEMENT SITES; Iglesia Luterana Cristo Rey: is an inner-city congregation of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America made up primarily of Mexican-American families and
Mexican immigrants. Cristo Rey has an After School Enrichment Program for neighborhood
children, a Parish Nurse program, and operates Border Immersion Experiences
for student and adult groups who are interested in learning more about border
life. The BSC volunteer at Cristo Rey coordinates the Border Immersion Events
and helps with special events of the congregation. Knowledge of the Spanish
language is a must. This position does not meet requirements for participation
in the AmeriCorps Education Award Program. Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center: mission is to protect the human
rights of refugees and other immigrants, to challenge the policies and practices
which oppress them, and to strive for systemic change towards social justice.
Founded in 1987, Las Americas provides pro-bono legal assistance for individuals
seeking political asylum, battered immigrant woman, and unaccompanied minors
who have been detained by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS).
Several positions are available at Las Americas. Volunteers at Las Americas
should be bilingual and have good communication in Spanish and in English. These
positions meet requirements for participation in the AmeriCorps Education Award
Program.
Diocesan Migrant and Refugee Services (DMRS): is a center providing
legal assistance to immigrants seeking legal status in the U.S. DMRS provides
help in obtaining work visas, to helping individuals and families gain
citizenship. DMRS is active in dealing with social issues concerning
immigration. Services also provided by the center include family reunification,
individuals seeking asylum and work with the Violence Against Women Act. The
volunteer will receive training in "intakes" to learning case management. The
volunteer must be proficient in Spanish. This position meets the requirements to
participate in the AmeriCorps Educational Awards Program. |
