Creepy Crawly Critters of the Desert Southwest
Where: Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park site or your own site
Cost: $45
Ages: 5-adult (Program will be age appropriate for the group)
Maximum Group Size: 20
Length: 1 hour
People call them bugs, insects, spiders, or creepy-crawlies, but scientists
call them all “arthropods.” This important group includes
insects, spiders, scorpions, centipedes, millipedes, and crustaceans like
rollie-pollies and lobsters. Join a Nature Park scientist to learn the
features that all arthropods share. Then we will focus on some of the
most fascinating arthropods of the desert, like vinegaroons, scorpions,
tarantula hawks, and many more. There will be live specimens and beautiful
displays of arthropods for that up-close and personal view. If this program
is done at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park, you will also have a chance
to find some arthropods in their native habitats.
Growing Up Arid (desert plants)
Where: Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park or your own site
Cost: $45
Age: 5-adult (Program will be age appropriate for the group)
Maximum Group Size: 20
Length: 1 hour
It is tough to be a plant in the desert, where little water is available
and lots of hungry herbivores are always looking for a meal! Join a Chihuahuan
Desert Nature Park scientist to learn how some favorite desert plants
(including honey mesquite, soaptree yucca, ocotillo and creosote bush)
are adapted to live in this dry environment. Unique hands-on models and
a chance to role-play as your favorite desert plant will bring this topic
to life. If this program is done at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park,
we will see these amazing plants in their native setting.
Desert Scavenger Hunt
Where: Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park
Cost: $45
Age: 5-18 (Program will be age appropriate for the group)
Maximum Group Size: 20
Length: 1 hour
When you look out onto the desert, do you only see brown? Your view will
change following a Desert Scavenger Hunt! A Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park
scientist will help you take a closer look at the desert to see what this
amazing ecosystem has to offer. Take a walk on the wild side to look at
the desert from different scales, learn about several of the most common
plants, search for evidence of animals, and much more. You never know
what you may discover! Take your Desert Scavenger Hunt answers home with
you and share your discoveries with others.
Desert Discovery Trail Guided Walk
Where: Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park only
Cost: $50
Age: 5-adult (Program will be age appropriate for the group)
Maximum Group Size: 20
Length: 1.5 hours
Take a guided walk on the Desert Discovery Trail with a Chihuahuan Desert
Nature Park scientist. Look under a rock or through the binoculars and
you never know what you may discover. Did native people ever use this
area on the western side of the Jornada Basin? What is soil cement? Does
creosote bush smell like rain or is it the other way around? What made
those tracks, and what lives in that hole? As desert explorers, you will
discover the answers to these questions and many others. Keep your senses
keen and your brain inquisitive on this adventure. Kids are welcome to
keep the kids’ activity booklet we will use along the trail. Others
will use a Self-Guided Tour Booklet, which is available to purchase after
the program for $3.
