The Schoolyard Desert Discovery Project is a unique science education program that brings the excitement of authentic, locally relevant environmental science to more than 6,500 K-12 students throughout New Mexico and West Texas each year.

The Schoolyard Desert Discovery Project is part of the national Long-Term Ecological Research Program (LTER), a collaborative network of more than 1800 scientists and students at 24 sites across the country.

Locally, the Schoolyard Desert Discovery Project is coordinated by a collaboration of the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park, the Jornada Basin LTER, and the USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range. Each partner brings considerable expertise to the project, facilitating the expansion of the project to far more students than could be reached by any one partner alone.
