FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GET BATTY WITH THE CHIHUAHUAN DESERT NATURE PARK As the sun goes down and the desert ground starts to come awake with critters, the sky also comes alive with life. What is it? A bird, a plane, Superman? No, it is a Myotis lucifugus (commonly called the Little Brown Bat). Bats have had a bad name because most of us know so little about them. They are seen as pests and disease carriers, but in reality they are some of our best neighbors, eating their weight in mosquitoes and other insects (over 1,000+) every night. Just in time for Halloween, this nighttime program will explore the world of the bat. How do they see in the dark? What do they eat? Do they really get tangled in long hair? Just as the program is ending, the full moon will be rising over the Organ Mountains to bathe the Jornada Basin in moonlight. Bring a flashlight. Free. Thanks to a grant from the ADC Foundation, nearly 200 students in Santa Teresa will receive quality, hands-on science opportunities from the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park next school year. Students at Santa Teresa Elementary School will take part in the Discover the Desert Program, which allows students to learn about science and their surroundings through monthly classroom programs and field trips to the Nature Park. At Santa Teresa Middle School, students will use real scientific tools to collect information about weather, soil, plants and animals in their schoolyard. Bridgett Bumpas, a teacher at Santa Teresa Middle School was excited to hear that her school and the elementary school would benefit from this grant. “I am so proud of the Santa Teresa Elementary School for getting assistance with science, as this will better prepare them for the middle school…. I’m looking forward already for next school year!” Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park Executive Director Dr. Stephanie Bestelmeyer said, “We are always looking for ways to expand Nature Park science education programs throughout southern New Mexico and West Texas. We are so grateful to ADC and especially their Santa Teresa Community Connections Committee for allowing us the opportunity to serve students in Santa Teresa.” The contribution from ADC was made possible through the ADC Foundation, the charitable arm of ADC that is dedicated to increasing science, math, engineering and technology education for K-12 and higher education. ADC helps the world communicate by supplying a variety of network infrastructure products and services to communications service providers who in turn enable consumers and businesses to use voice, video, Internet and data services.
