This tutorial was done with PSP9   
but could be done with other versions.

All of my tutorials are written following the steps I used to make my graphic.   
It is my hope that you will take what I provide 
and do your own thing with it. 

YOU WILL NEED

Paint Shop Pro -  Download a trial version   
  paisley font
Basic knowledge of vectors and layers

Remember to SaveOften STEPS - These are the steps I used.

1.

Lets Begin

Open paisley.ttf and minimize it on your desktop
New Image  300x300
File/Save As: butterfly.pspimage
Flood fill with #416395 to make it easier to see

2.

 The Body

Foreground Style: Null
Background Color: #ffffff

New Vector Layer: body
Ellipse Tool [Q]
Mode: ellipse
Show Nodes: checked
Create On Vector: Checked
Anti-alias: Checked

Draw a small ellipse
{140x117 to 159x138}

PSP 9 added a new feature on the Preset Shape Tool Palette

You can just draw a small ellipse then highlight the numbers and change them [How easy is that???] Thank You Connie for teaching me this

Objects/ Convert to Path
Pen Tool [V]
Mode: Edit
Click the top node
Pull the control arm to the right slightly
Click Apply

Ellipse Tool [Q]
Draw another ellipse
{139x135 to 160x258}


Objects/ Convert to Path
Pen Tool [V]
Click the top node
Pull the control arm to the right slightly
Click Apply

New Vector Layer
Ellipse Tool [Q]
Draw another ellipse
{103x45 to 122x56}


Layers/ Duplicate

Object Selection Tool [O]
Click on any empty area
Note: I do this because if the object in the layer you duplicate is
selected, both it and the new one will be selected. We only want
to mirror the new object

Image/ Mirror

Layer Palette
Click the + sign next to Copy of Vector 1
Double click on New Ellipse
Rename it: right

Click the + sign next to Vector 1
Double click on New Ellipse
Rename it: left

Click on left
Hold down the Shift Key
Click on right
Drag both of these to the body layer

Right Click on Copy of Vector 1/ Delete
Right Click on Vector 1/ Delete

Active layer: Raster 1
New Vector Layer: antenna

Materials Palette
Click the Swap Materials arrow to reverse the colors

Pen Tool [V]
Mode: Draw Point to Point - Bezier Curves
Connect Segments: NOT Checked
Create On Vector: Checked
Show Nodes: Checked
Line Style: +Solid
Width: 2.00

Click on the top center of the head
Click on the end of the ellipse

Switch Mode to: Edit
Click on any empty space
Right Click the top node/ Node Type/ Curve Before
Click on the Control Arm and pull upwards a little

Object Selection Tool [O]
Click on any empty area

Image/ Mirror

Rename these right and left
Move the right antenna down to the antenna layer
Delete: Copy of antenna

3.

 The Wings

Materials Palette
Click the Swap Materials arrow to reverse the colors

New Vector Layer: upper wing
Text Tool [T]
Create as: Vector
Font: Paisley
Size: 125
Stroke Width: 1
Alignment: Center
Anti-alias: Checked: Sharp
Auto kern: Checked

Type the letter p
Objects/ Convert to Path
 

By doing the Convert to Path you can close the image and when you open it again the shapes will still be there If you do not Convert to Path you will have to have the font either installed or open before you will see the shapes The image will open using the default font [usually Arial and all you would see is two P's]

Image/ Rotate/ Free Rotate [Ctrl+R]
Direction: Right
Free:75
OK

A bounding box surrounds the text
Click the Pivot Point and drag the box to the desired position

New Vector Layer: lower wing
Text Tool [T]
Change Size to: 85
Type the letter p
Objects/ Convert to Path

Image/ Rotate/ Free Rotate [Ctrl+R]
Direction: Right
Free: 25
OK

Move the wing into place

I didn't like the placement of my wings
Object Selection Tool [O]
Click on one wing
Hold down the Shift Key
Click on the other wing
Move them as desired

Click on any empty space to deselect

Active Layer: upper wing
Layers/ Duplicate
Image /Mirror

Repeat for the lower wing

Active Layer: Copy of lower wing
Layers/ Convert to Raster Layer
Repeat for each vector layer


Active Layer: Copy of lower wing
Layers/ Merge/ Merge Down

Repeat for the upper wings
 

4.

 Add Some Detail

Active Layer: upper wing

Effects/ 3D Effects/ Inner Bevel
Bevel: #5
Width: 8
Smoothness: 15
Depth: 2
Ambience: -30
Shininess: 40
Color: White
Angle: 315
Intensity: 50
Elevation: 50
OK

Effects/ 3D Effects/ Drop Shadow
Vertical: 1
Horizontal: 1
Opacity: 60
Blur: 0
Color: Black
OK

Active Layer: lower wing
Effects/ 3D Effects/ Inner Bevel
Effects/ 3D Effects/ Drop Shadow

Adjust/ Brightness and Contrast/ Brightness/Contrast [Shift+B]
Brightness: 15
Contrast: 15
Ok

Active Layer: antenna
Effects/ 3D Effects/ Inner Bevel
Effects/ 3D Effects/ Drop Shadow
Change Opacity to: 40
Effects/ 3D Effects/ Drop Shadow
Change Vertical to: -1

5.

 Shape The Body

Active Layer: body
Selection Tool [S]
Selection Type: Rectangle
Mode: Replace
Feather: 0
Anti-alias: NOT Checked
Draw a rectangle that only selects the body

Click inside the rectangle to select
Effects/ 3D Effects/ Cutout
Offsets: 0
Opacity: 75
Blur: 15.00
Shadow Color: black
OK

Now select the antenna tips
Effects/ 3D Effects/ Cutout
Change blur 50: 5

Layers/ Arrange/ Bring to Top
