This tutorial was done with PSP9   
but could be done with other versions.

 

YOU WILL NEED

Paint Shop Pro -  Download a trial version 
Color Palette
Brush Settings - needed in part 2
Basic knowledge of vectors and layers  

Remember to SaveOften
STEPS - These are the steps I used.

1.

Lets Begin

New Image 
File/Save As: 
Convert each layer to Raster

We will be adding a lot of layers. If you prefer you can merge the layers for each part once we move on to a new part

Also in this part all new layers will be Raster Layers unless otherwise stated

I like to clear my command history after each part
[this helps free up some memory and reduce crashing]
To do this Tap the F3 key to bring up the History palette
 [if you don't already have it up]
Click the double arrows to see more and you will see the following

Click on Empty Command History
Save the image and continue working

Open the color palette and keep it on the desktop
so you can select the colors as needed

The left colors is the Foreground Color
The right color the Background Color

Print out the brush settings and keep them handy while you work

Tree Inside

  Active Layer: tree inside

Adjust/ Add/Remove Noise/ Add Noise
Gaussian: checked
Noise: 15%
Monochrome: Checked
OK

Adjust/ Blur/ Gaussian Blur
Radius: 1
OK
3. Tree
  Active Layer: tree

Colors: tree detail

Selections/ Select All [Ctrl+A]
Selections/ Float [Ctrl+F]
Selections/ Defloat [Ctrl+Shift+F]

New Layer: tree detail

Paint Brush [B]
Brush: tree detail

Fill in the main part of the tree

Keep Selected

Change the Brush Rotation to: 132
Fill in the lower branch

Keep Selected

Change the Brush Rotation to: 43
Fill in the upper branch

Keep Selected

New Layer: tree shading

Color: tree shading

Paint Brush [B]
Brush: tree shading

Brush on some shading
Use Alt+C to increase the size of the brush
Alt+X to decrease the size

Smudge Brush
Brush: smudge 1

Change Brush Rotation as needed
Smudge the shading
Selections/ Select None [Ctrl+D]

4. Hole Detail
  New Layer: hole detail

Paint Brush [B]
Brush: hole detail

Colors: hole

Paint around the hole
I find it easier to control the brush if I zoom in to about 200

Adjust/ Add/Remove Noise/ Add Noise
Gaussian: Checked
Noise: 25%
Monochrome: Checked
OK

Warp Brush

If you cannot see some of the settings just click on the expand arrow
 

Run the brush around the hole a few times to smooth and warp the edge.
Don't try to smooth too much the edge should be rough

If the edge starts getting out too far, switch the mode to Push [push] and gently move it back where you want it

Click Apply

Smudge from the middle toward the edge

8. Muzzle

Double click on muzzle
Check - Lock transparency

Color: head/muzzle

Flood Fill the muzzle

Double click on muzzle
Un-Check - Lock transparency

Change Size to: 5
Change Brush Thickness to: 100

Smudge around the edge of the muzzle to blend it into the head

Paint on some color around the edge of the head

Change Brush size to: 5
Paint more details

Selections/ Modify/ Expand

Change Hardness to: 100
Smudge around the edge with short quick strokes

Repeat the edge smudge

13. Finishing Up
  I added some sky and earth for a background then put in some pine trees
I had made from my Pine Tree Tutorial
