PSP Tutorial - Vector Frog

	YOU WILL NEED
	Paint Shop Pro Download a trial version here Basic knowledge of vectors and layers
	This is a simple vector tutorial Have you ever seen one of those How To Draw strips in the newspaper? This is going to be kind of like that. Some people like having the coordinates I used so I will be including them in {brackets}, feel free to do your own thing. example: {95x50 to 265x165} Place cursor at 95x50 Click and hold the left mouse button while moving the mouse until it reaches 265x265 release the mouse button to place the ellipse A New Feature I am trying - To find out a word i.e. cusp just click on the link and a new window will pop up with more information. I would appreciate your input on this feature
	Remember to SaveOften STEPS - These are the steps I used.
1.	Lets Begin
	New Image 400 x 400 File/Save As: frog.pspimage
	The Basic Parts
2.	Head
	New Vector Layer: head Preset Shape Tool Shape: Ellipse Anti-alias: Checked Create as vector: Checked Line style: +Solid Width: 1 Foreground Color: #70BB70 Background Color: #68D068 Draw an ellipse for the head {110x73 to 283x184} Object Selection Tool Right click/ Align Object/ Horz Center In Canvas Optional Step - rename ellipse Layer Palette Click the + sign next to head Double Click on Ellipse Rename ellipse to: head I do this for every vector part I draw but from now on I will just say rename ellipse to:
3.	Body
	New Vector Layer: body Preset Shape Tool Draw a slightly larger Ellipse for his body {99x120 to 301x293} Rename ellipse to: body Object Selection Tool Right click/ Align Object/ Horz Center In Canvas Layers/ Arrange/ Move Down
4.	Back Leg
	New Vector Layer: back leg Preset Shape Tool Draw an ellipse for his back leg {58x155 to 174x299} Layers/ Arrange/ Move Down Rename ellipse to: back leg
5.	Front Leg
	Make Body the active layer New Vector Layer: front leg Preset Shape Tool Change shape to: Rectangle Draw a long thin rectangle for his front leg {125x189 to 153x326} Rename rectangle to: front leg
6.	The Eyes
	Make head the active layer New Vector Layer: eye Preset Shape Tool Change shape back to: Ellipse Change Width to: 8 Foreground Color: #317626 Background color: #000000 Draw a small ellipse for his eye {150x74 to 180x103} These are the basic parts we will be working with Layer Palette Right Click on eye/ Duplicate Click the + sign next to Copy of eye to expand the view Click on Ellipse to make sure it is the only object selected Image/ Mirror Layer Palette Click the + sign next eye Hold down the Shift Key and click on each Ellipse Notice they are both highlighted Right click on one of the Ellipses/ Group Double click on Group 1 and rename it: eyes Right click on copy of eye/ Delete Click the +sign to expand eyes Click on one of the ellipses Look at the image to see which one is selected Rename ellipse to: right eye Rename other ellipse to: left eye The layers should be in this order eye head front leg body back leg
	Node Editing
7.	Head
	Click on Head to make it the active layer Object Selection tool Click on the head to select it I like working on a large image when node editing Tap the 1+ sign on the Preview Toolbar to zoom in I tapped 5 times Tap the 1- to reduce Pen Tool Mode: Edit Layer Palette Click the eye next to head to turn off the fill [makes it easier to see what you are doing] Click on the top center node and pull it down a little Click on one of the side nodes and grab the upper arm and pull up just a little Repeat for the other side Adding Nodes Hold down the Ctrl Key and run the mouse over the line until you see +ADD Still Holding down the CTRL Key Click the left mouse button to add a node Add a node on each side of the eye and another in the center of the eye repeat for other eye Click on one of the center eye nodes Hold down the Shift Key and click on the other center eye node Release the Shift Key Tap the up arrow on the number pad 21 times Hold down the Shift key and click on the four nodes beside the eyes Right click/ Node Type/ Cusp Click on any blank space to deselect Using the Control arm and control handle shape the eyelid Click the eye next to head to turn the view back on Now that wasn't so bad, was it?
8.	Body
	Click on Body to make it the active layer Object Selection tool Click on the body to select it Pen Tool Mode: Edit All I did here was Widen his shoulders slightly
9.	Back Legs
	Click on Back Leg to make it the active layer Object Selection tool Click on the back leg to select it Layer Palette Click the eye next to back leg to turn off the fill Click the eye next to body to turn it off Click the eye next to front leg and to turn them off so you can see what you are doing Pen Tool Mode: Edit Move the left side node up slightly Move the bottom node to the right slightly Move the right side node inward a little Add two nodes Hold down the Shift key and select both of the new nodes Right click/ Node Type/ Cusp Click on a blank space to deselect You have three nodes close together on the bottom Click on the center one and drag it to the left Grab the control arm and pull up and to the left a little Grab the control handle and pull down and to the right a little Add two more nodes on either side of the one you just moved I have numbered the nodes we are going to be working with Click on node #2 and move it inward Click on node #4 and move it inward Your frog now has toes Here is what we have so far Hold down the Shift Key and click on each of the five nodes Right Click/ Node Type/ Cusp Make slight adjustments to the nodes as desired Object Selection tool Click on any blank space to deselect Layers/ Duplicate Image/ Mirror Turn all the layers back on Object Selector Tool Click on one of the back legs Hold down the Shift Key and click on the other back leg Right Click/ Group Layer Palette Double Click on Group 1 Rename it: back legs Right Click on Copy of back leg/ Delete Click the + sign next to the back legs group Click on the one of the back legs Look to see which one it is - you want the right one Rename it: right back leg Rename the other left back leg
10.	Front Legs
	Make front leg the active layer Object Selection Tool Click on the front leg Pen Tool Mode: edit Hold Down the Shift Key and click on each of the two top nodes Tap the right arrow on the key pad 7 times Click on a blank area to deselect Right click on the top left node/ Node Type/ Curve Before Grab the control handle and pull to the left slightly Repeat for the right top node except choose Curve After Add a node on the right side Click on the top right node/ tap the Del key I darkened the outside line on the screenshot to make viewing easier Add two nodes near the bottom for his wrist Click on the left bottom node and pull it to the left a little Click on the right bottom node and pull it to the right Add three nodes Click on the center node and pull out slightly Click on left bottom node and move down a little Repeat for the right bottom node Now round out the toes a little Right click on a node/ Node Type/ Curve After Right click on a node/ Node Type/ Curve Before Move the nodes if needed If you want to adjust his wrist you will have to change the nodes to cusp Note: when drawing a vector object all the nodes will be cusp type but when you add nodes they are the smooth type Layers/ Duplicate Image/ Mirror Layer Palette Select both of the front legs Right click/ Group Right click on Copy of front leg/ Delete Double click on Group 1/ Rename to front legs Rename front legs: left front leg, right front leg
11.	Nose
	Almost done Drawing New vector layer: nose Preset Shape Tool Shape: Ellipse Anti-alias: Checked Create as vector: Checked Line style: +Solid Width: 1 Color Palette Foreground Color: Null Click the arrow to swap the foreground and background colors Draw a small ellipse for his nostril {184x121 to 196x135} Object Selection Tool Right click/ Copy Right click/ Paste New Vector Selection Rename ellipses to: right or left nostril Hold down the Shift Key and click on each nostril Right Click/ Group Double Click on Group 1 Rename to: nose
12.	Mouth
	Pen Tool Create as vector: Checked Mode: Draw Segment type: Line Segments Line style: +Solid Width: 2.00 Click the Swap Materials arrow New Vector Layer: mouth Draw a line for his mouth {135x134 to 260x134} Note: Hold down the Shift Key while drawing to draw a straight line Pen Tool Mode: Edit Right click on the left node/ Node Type/ Curve After Grab the arm and pull down and to the right a little Right click on the right node/ Node Type/ Curve Before Grab the handle and pull down and to the left a little Draw a small line at the corner of the mouth Following the steps above curve the line slightly Copy and paste as we did on the nose Use the Rotation Handle to rotate You might have to zoom in a lot to see what is happening Here is your basic frog
13.	Export as a Preset Shape - Optional
14.	Save Copy - Optional
	I like to save a copy of my images in vector layers so I can go back and change things easily File/ Save Copy As/ frog_vectors.pspimage
