YOU WILL NEED

Paint Shop Pro -  Download a trial version   
Jan's beautiful rose photo 
Basic knowledge of vectors and layers

Remember to SaveOften
STEPS - These are the steps I used.

1.

Lets Begin

Open pinkrose_jan.jpg
Thank You Jan for allowing us to use this photo
File/Save As: pinkrose.pspimage
Layers/Promote Background Layer

2.

 Drawing The Rose

Foreground Color: #d5a1b5
Background Color: #d2b1b8

Pen Tool
Mode: Draw Point To Point - Bezier Curves
Connect Segments: Checked
Create On Vector: Checked
Show Nodes: Checked

Line Style: +Solid
Width: 1.00
Anti-alias: Checked

New Vector Layer: 1
each layer will be one petal

Click the eye to turn off the fill while you draw

Place the cursor at bottom of first petal

Click then move along the edge of the petal clicking as you go
Notice I added some of the petal myself to make sure there are no blank spots

Objects/ Edit/ Close
Click Apply

Leave the view off for now

New Vector Layer: 2
Follow the steps above to draw the second petal

New Vector Layer: 3
Look at the photo the center is actually made up of several layers. We are going to draw it as one petal then add detail to make it appear like more layers
So just draw around the entire center

Continue drawing the other three petals making sure each petal is on its own layer



Here is the basic rose

Make 3 the active layer
New Vector Layer: 3 details

Foreground Color: #cb97a9
Set Background to Null

Pen Tool
Line Width: 2
Draw some detail lines

	I made my lines red so they would show up better in the screen shot
2:	You will notice that I do not have one continuous line I just hit Apply when I wanted to start another line

Here is my actual rose

 The Bud

Make 6 the active layer
New Vector Layer: bud

Ellipse Tool
Mode: Ellipse
Show Nodes: Checked
Create On Vector: checked
Line Style: +Solid
Width: 1.00
Anti-alias: Checked

Draw a small ellipse for the bud

Objects/Convert to Path
I prefer to do all my drawing, then go back and node edit if needed

4.

 The Tails

New Vector Layer: bud tails
Click the eye next to bud to turn off the view

Pen Tool
Line Width: 1.00

Foreground Color: #2e4401
Background Color: #3e4b05

Click the eye next to bud tails.
click around the petal as before

Objects/Edit/Close
Click Apply

New Vector Layer: bud tails 1
Draw the next petal as above

Continue adding layers and drawing tails
Don't forget to add a couple behind the bud

Active Layer: Raster 1
New Vector Layer: tails 1
Add the tails to your rose

 Stems

Active Layer: Raster 1
New Vector Layer: Stems

Draw the stems

Here is what we have so far

Make a Custom Line - Optional

I wanted jagged edged leaves so I made a custom line

Pen Tool
Click on the arrow next to Line Style

Click on the custom button

This opens the Styled Line Editor

The very first thing I always do is click the Save as New button and give it a name.
Here are my settings

Click on Save and you line is ready to use

  Add Some Leaves

New Vector Layer: leaves

Pen Tool
Mode: Draw Point To Point - Bezier Curves
Connect Segments: NOT Checked
Create On Vector: Checked
Show Nodes: Checked

Line Style: +Solid
Width: 3.00
Anti-alias: Checked

Foreground Color: #2e4401
Background Style: Null

Click near the stem
then click where you want the vein to end and
without releasing the mouse button rotate the line
to form the curve

Pen Tool
Mode: Draw Point To Point - Bezier Curves
Connect Segments: Checked
Create On Vector: Checked
Show Nodes: Checked

Line Style: cdr_spikes [this is my custom line]
Width: 1.00
Anti-alias: Checked

Foreground Color: #2e4401
Background Color: #2e4401

Draw a leaf at the end of the vein
Objects/Edit/Close
Click Apply

Add more leaves on each side of the vein
You should have 5-7 leaves

Pen Tool
Switch Mode to Edit

Using the nodes Shape the leaf as desired

 Leaf Veins

New Vector Layer: veins

Pen Tool
Mode: Draw Point To Point - Bezier Curves

Line Style: +Solid
Width: 1.00
Anti-alias: Checked

Foreground Color: #1f2e00
Background Style: Null

Click near the stem
then click where you want the vein to end and
without releasing the mouse button rotate the line
to form the curve

Repeat for each leaf

Click the Checkmark to apply

New Vector Layer: veins 2
Add more veins the same way

9.

 Final Steps

Use the nodes to shape petals or leaves if needed

Save as a Preset Shape Optional

Convert each layer to Raster

 On to Page 2 to shade the rose
