This tutorial was done with PSP9   
This is part of a series of tutorials to help the users of PSP 6 & 7 ease into vectors in the newer versions of Paint Shop Pro.  Each tutorial will create the same image using a different version of PSP.

 

YOU WILL NEED

Paint Shop Pro -  Download a trial version 
Need an older version of PSP
you can download trial versions

Basic knowledge of vectors and layers  

Remember to SaveOften
STEPS - These are the steps I used.

1.

Lets Begin

New Image  200x400
File/Save As: tulip.pspimage
The colors I am using are:
Purple Foreground: #753571
Purple Background: #954896

Green Foreground: #1A3C0A
Green Background: #315A28

2.

The Flower

  New Vector Layer: tulip
Colors: purples

Ellipse Tool
Mode: Draw Ellipse
Show Nodes: NOT Checked
Create On Vector: Checked
Line style: +Solid
Width: 1
Anti-alias: Checked
 

In PSP 6 and 7 the Tool Options Palette was floating. 
Starting with PSP8 it is anchored below the main toolbar.

Place the cursor at 46,11

Numbers are now on the right side of the screen below the layer palette

Click and hold the Left Mouse button while moving the cursor downward and to the right until you get to 141,130

Release the mouse button

PSP 6 and 7 used the Object Selector to chose Node Edit.
Starting with PSP 8 the Pen Toolis used with the mode set to: Edit

You will see the bouncing box around the object
Click on any blank space to begin editing

In PSP 6 and 7 when you chose Node Edit the fill was automatically turned off. Starting with PSP 8 You need to manually turn off the fill.
To do this click on the eye next to the layer in the Layer Palette.

Starting in PSP9 When you use the Rectangle, Ellipse or Symmetric Shape
You need to convert the object to a path.
To do this go to Objects/ Convert to Path

Now you can edit the nodes as in other versions.
If you use the Preset Shape tool you do not have to do this

Objects/ Convert to Path

Add 2 nodes

Click on the Left side node Hold down the Shift Key and click on the Right side node

Release the Shift Key

Click and hold the Rotation Point

and move it upwards until the nodes are are about even with the center node

Click the left node
Tap the Left Arrow key on the keypad 10 times

Click the right node
Tap the Right Arrow key on the keypad 10 times

In the earlier versions the nodes in the ellipse were set to Cusp.
In PSP 9 they are set to Smooth

Double click on any node [this selects them all]
Right Click/ Node Type/ Cusp

Click on the right node we added
Hold down the shift key and click on the Left node we added

Release the Shift Key
Tap the down arrow on the keypad 25 times

Use the control Arms to adjust the shape of the flower

3. Details
  Background Style: Transparent

New Vector Layer: details

Pen Tool
Mode: Draw Point to Point - Bezier Curves
Connect Segments: NOT Checked
Create On Vector: Checked
Show Nodes: checked
Line style: +Solid
Width: 1.00
Anti-alias: Checked

Place the cursor near the left node we added
Click once
Move to just left of the bottom node
Click once

Apply

Pen Tool
Mode: Edit

Click on any blank space to go to edit mode

Right Click on the top node/ Node Type/ Curve After
Pull the arm to the right a little

Right Click on the bottom node/ Node Type/ Curve Before
Pull the arm to the right a little

Apply

Repeat for the right side

4. Stem
  New Vector Layer: stem
Foreground Color: #1A3C0A
Background Style: Transparent

Pen Tool
Mode: Draw Point to Point - Bezier Curves
Connect Segments: NOT Checked
Create On Vector: Checked
Show Nodes: checked
Line style: +Solid
Width: 8.00
Anti-alias: Checked

Place the cursor at the bottom of the flower
Click once
Move to the bottom of the image
Click once

Apply

Following the same steps as for the details, shape the stem

5. Leaves
  New Vector Layer: leaves
Background Color: #315A28

Ellipse Tool
Mode: Draw Ellipse
Show Nodes: NOT Checked
Create On Vector: Checked
Line style: +Solid
Width: 1
Anti-alias: Checked

Draw a long thin ellipse

Object Selection Tool

Click the rotation handle rotate the bottom of the leaf toward the stem


Objects/ Convert to Path

Pen Tool
Mode: Edit

Double click on any node
Right Click/ Node Type/ Cusp

Use the nodes and adjust the curves of the leaves.

Layers/ Duplicate

Active layer: copy of leaves

Click on any blank space
Image/ Mirror

Click on the leaf to select
Move it into place


Adjust the shape if desired.
 

Now create the image using one of the other versions of Paint Shop Pro
PSP6,   PSP7,   PSP8,   PSPX
