Sculpture - $525.00

The Rhythms of Stone Workshop

Award-winning sculptor, DJ Garrity leads a fascinating exploration of three-dimensional form and the creative energies awakened through the ageless process of stone sculpture. Conceived at the dawn of artistic expression, the rhythms and flow of stone carving remain a meditative experience that joins mind, body and spirit in a creative odyssey. As the Sculptor-In-Residence of Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the artist has enjoyed a broad range of support for course development and student participation, which is reflected by his wide-ranging workshop agenda. The course objectives are concerned with establishing a basic understanding of the stone carving process, the three-dimensional aspects of portraiture and a further exploration of the esoteric values associated with this ancient art, the rhythm and flow of creative endeavor. The course is appropriate for all levels of experience and recommended for both individual exploration and professional development. A hands-on approach utilizes the human face as a template to guide students through the use of various hand tools, techniques and procedures related to the stone carving process. The workshops of DJ Garrity are accredited for professional development by Augustana College of South Dakota.

Robert Burridge
All Levels
Acrylic - $550.00

THE BURRIDGE PLEIN AIRE EXPERIENCE

Discover the actual painting “high” of Van Gogh, Manet, and Monet as you see for yourself why painting outdoors was – and still is – so popular. Starting in a controlled studio environment you will paint and practice the principles of working outdoors, including how to set up and prepare for the outdoor experience. You will travel to the site and set up your outdoor studio, painting all day with watercolor (preferred for painting outdoors, it’s a simpler set up). Back in the studio, using acrylics, you’ll commit to paper or canvas and paint what has been visually imprinted, sketched and photographed. This course will teach you all the basic principles to paint trees, clouds, meadows, mountains, water and abstract landscapes. Be prepared to paint looser, bolder, freer, lighter and more intuitively. Handouts and a handy red filter will be provided.
July 14 - July 18
Birgit OConnor
All Levels
Watercolor - $550.00

FLOWERS IN BLOOM

Birgit will focus on a variety of different flowers, including the paper-like quality of the Matilija Poppy as well as the intense beauty of other flowers. In this workshop, you will learn how to build depth, add drama, and create the magic of dimensional illusion by adding water drops. She will share her techniques and color combinations, and you will learn how to create large smooth washes of color to create the petals. Learn to interpret a flower without adding every detail. In this class, Birgit provides reference material and sketches, but you are welcome to use your own material if preferred.
Pat Averill

Colored Pencil - $390.00

PENCILS DID THAT?

“Wow!” This will be your reaction as you experience the delight of colored pencil work with Pat. She recognizes that the stress and struggle of life is always visible. “Yet in its midst,” she says, “I seek a window into a more peaceful world that observes the natural beauty of light and color.” Pat shares that philosophy plus her easy-to-follow methods in this workshop. An oft-published author of how-to create art with colored pencils, she has also won a variety of national awards. Even if you can’t draw, Pat’s foolproof “simple start” method will help you express yourself with ease.

Cathy McAnally Lubke

Watercolor - $350.00

FUN WITH COLOR AND DESIGN

The excitement of watercolor is the primary essence of this fun and creative workshop. Each day, you will develop a painting of a different subject. Cathy will demo each morning, explaining the compositional emphasis for the day. Color schemes and value studies will add to the strength of each person’s painting. There will be plenty of painting time, with individual attention. Subjects will include florals, landscapes, still-life and some surprises. Cathy is an award winning artist who teaches at Angelo State University in Texas.
Mike Mahon
All Levels
Pastel - $410.00

LIGHT AND COLOR WITH PASTELS

Mike paints without the burden of “making a statement,” as he lets the subject speak to him as he works. This realization – that the subject was more profound than the artist – freed him from 20 years of fear of painting. Accordingly, he enjoys his work, and his students will enjoy theirs as well. He begins with a simple design strategy, developed through a carbon pencil drawing. Then he uses hard pastels, with the darkest darks working into the lightest lights, finishing off with soft pastel highlights. He has a flair for color, and a mastery of drawing and design. He teaches a process rather than a technique, and students consistently rave over their results.
July 28 - August 1
