Coit plying her trade

Biography

When I was a wife and mother in North Dakota, people in the community expected me to stay home, raise children, and work on the farm. My own reality was being an artist. Trusting my doubts about others' realities, I went back to college and finished my Master of Fine Arts degree.

I took three years to explore and expand my vision by living on a houseboat in Minnesota and then in an RV, travelling around the country.

Now, as I'm settled in Silver City, I am continuing to reflect on society's entrapping beliefs—especially toward women. My works of metal encourage others to recognize distorted realities and believe in their doubts.

Artist's Statement

We trap ourselves in a world of distorted reality. When we believe in our own doubts, we begin to see the wide open door of escape. In my works of metal I explore these concepts by using warped architectural shapes, secret objects, movable parts, figures, and text. In this way I reveal hidden opportunity.
