Spider-Man
and --?
The true appeal of the first
couple of years of this series was anticipating the wonderful match-ups,
catching the first glimpse of their covers, seeing Spider-Man (or sometimes
the Human Torch) teamed with another star of the Marvel Universe, both
of them in full-throated action-- such as the sight of Spider-Man battling
the Werewolf By Night on a bridge in San Fransicso. |
The art on MARVEL
TEAM-UP was generally quite good, particularly as done by Gil Kane (see
his wonderful work with Captain America, Spider-Man and the Gray Gargoyle,
one of the best stories in the series). The stars tend to be the more famous
characters of the Marvel universe, with Human Torch occasionally sharing
the spotlight (as in the case of the classic Human Torch/Iceman dust-up)
but there are occasional appearance by some rarely-seen characters such
as Brother Voodoo. This is a must-have volume if you are in the mood for
a trip down Marvel's memory lane. Where else could one see Spider-Man and
the Ghost Rider battle the Orb, a villian whose head is one giant eye...?

Paperback: 64 pages

ISBN: 0785108327 |

|
This
is a reprint of the magazine-sized black & white "Spectacular Spider-Man"
that Marvel put out in 1968. With story by Stan Lee and art by John Romita
(Sr.) and Jim Mooney, this is an election year tale of a slick politician
coming out of nowhere to take the lead in the race for mayor of New York
City. But the crooked politician is running a major scam, secretly staging
attacks on himself as a way of building sympathy and support. But as the
web-slinger discovers, the candidate has far more sinister plans than winning
an election. |
There
was a lot of fanfare about this comic when it came out, being the first
"second" Spider-Man title, but it only ran for two issues. The second
issue was in color, and featured the Green Goblin. This 2002 reprint also
includes an updated Spider-Man origin by (Sub-Mariner's creator and one
of the first--1939--Marvel artists) Bill Everett.

The neighborhood
isn't so friendly anymore. Spider-Man has been operating in New York City
for years; shunned or reviled, he has touched most of its eight million
citizens. And each of them has a story. |
It's an entirely
different way at looking at Spider-Man, the way he operates and the world
he lives in. Each story is by a different set of today's top comics creators,
starting with "The Thousand," which introduces a new threat to Spider-Man
courtesy of Garth Ennis (Punisher, Preacher, Hitman) and John McCrea (Hitman,
Jenny Sparks, Hulk Smash!). What's it like to work for the Kingpin? It's
answered in "Severance Package" from crime novelist Greg Rucka (Shooting
at Midnight, Black Widow) and Edward Risso (100 Bullets). "Flowers for
Rhino" is an offbeat look at one of Spider-Man's oldest foes, from Peter
Milligan (X-Force, Shade the Changing Man) and Duncan Fegredo (Jay and
Silent Bob).

|
This book provides
a good introduction into the world of the Amazing Spider-Man. It re-presents
the story of his first battle against the tentacled Doctor Otto Octavius,
who soon becomes known as Doctor Octopus. Written and illustrated by the
creators of Spider-Man, it tells the origins of 'Doc Ock,' of how his arms
were fused to his body, and how this sent his mind over the edge... |
