Question 1: What are your priorities in the
resolution of the hospital issue?
The hospital resolution must focus on meeting the goals laid out
for a community hospital – meeting the needs of the insured,
uninsured and indigent. Weighing all possible solutions must be
a priority and ensuring that the solution includes continuing services
critical for our neighbors, while maintaining the employee base
and benefits. We need to preserve the value of our community hospital
and in no means should we give it away.
Question 2: Describe your long-term goals for water resource
management, both municipal and regional; identify 2 – 4 specific
steps to take immediately.
Although water resources have been secured for Las Cruces, it is
incumbent to encourage the development of conservation programs
that will further the life of this resource. Programs should include
the promotion of water saving devices for citizens, xeriscaping
incentives and smart, sustainable developments. It is important
to realize this is a regional issue and that we must partner with
our neighbors, EBID and the state on issues such as the desalination
projects.
Question 3: What revenue streams should be used to build and
operate the proposed convention center?
I believe that the lodger’s surcharge currently approved
is an appropriate funding mechanism for the proposed convention
center. I also believe that a professional management team should
have goals in place that will aggressively pursue additional revenue
streams – those that will fill the center with local, state,
regional and national events, so that further city funding is minimized.
The Convention Center facility should also become a community focal
point for cultural arts and entertainment.
Question 4: It is commonly accepted that the city must provide
for public safety, utilities and roads. What, beyond these basic
services, are your priorities for spending city funds?
Investment in quality of life projects for citizens is critical
to the continued improvement of our community. This means providing
recreational services for youths, seniors and everyone in between.
Maintenance of our facilities and parks must be constant and up-to-date.
It is important that we are a fair employer willing to invest in
our employees. We must continue investing in economic development
programs that bring new and help grow existing businesses in our
community.
