Team History The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Department Special Response Team was first formed in 1992 and was composed of 17 deputies, and has since stream lined down to a team of twelve highly trained deputies (excluding a sniper detachment), a K-9 component, and a tactical EMS unit. Since Sheriff Juan Hernandez’s term in office, the team is now receiving monetary compensation in addition to the base salary as the entire team is on call 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Over the years the Special Response Team has responded to hundreds of call outs, and is activated for high risk warrant service, barricaded/armed subjects, hostage situations, riot conditions, dignitary protection, surveillance details, and any other situation that might require a tactical team as deemed by the Sheriff. The team trains twenty hours a month, with four of these hours dedicated to K-9 and tactical team interaction. The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Department Special Response Team is one of only a few tactical teams in southern New Mexico and has assisted other surrounding state law enforcement agencies as well as federal agencies when a tactical element was needed.
