Introduction
My grandmother was born Viola May Olive on 8.27.1893 in Corning, AR.
This page begins with her and works backwards for about eight generations.
A special section will be added at the end the talk about other "Olive's"
we may or may not be related to. Much of what is included here comes
from a book on the Olive family and stories handed down through the family
from my Aunt Cornell. We begin with Viola May Olive's father.
Robert E. Lee Olive (b. 11.21.1870) (d. 7.4.1954 Graves County, KY) was married
three times and had two children by each wife. His wives were Laura
Sanders (d. 11.26 1895 or 1896, buried in Naylor, MO), Amba Z. Williams (b.
9.13.1880) (d. 6.16.1912) and Lonnie Bridges. His children with Laura
were Viola May Olive and Johnnnie Lewis Olive. His children with
Ambia were Lollie Olive and Elmer Olive. His children with Lonnie were
Mary Dean Olive and Jack Olive.
Robert is buried in the cemetery next to Knob Creek Church of Christ,
TN (36° 30.133' North and 88° 39.850' West). It was once a
high school, but is now a elementary school. It does not take a genius
to tell he was born around the time of the Civil War. There is also
no doubt about the political leanings of the Olives in western Kentucky.
Charles Louis Douglas Olive (b. 9.23.1841) married Martha Jane Cornelia Hainline.
They had six children: Robert E. Lee Olive, Josie Olive, Fred
Olive, Beulah Olive, Lena Olive, and Willie Olive.
CLD Olive led a pretty colorful life and I have
dedicated an entire page to him
James M. Olive (b. 11.24.1818) married Elizabeth W. Walker on 12.10.1840).
They had five infants who died before they were named plus three sons and
two daughters. There children were: Charles Louis Douglas Olive
(b. 9.23.1841), Mary Jane Isabella Olive (b. 11.30.1845), John Parkel Olive
(b. 9.1.1848), Amanda Elizabeth Olive (b. 1.28.1851), and James Holmes Olive
(1.6.1854).
On 8.12.1857, James M. Olive married Partheney P. Dacus. They had
four boys and one girl. They were Abel C. W. Olive (b. 8.10.1858) (never
married), Fanny Bell Olive (b. 8.2.1860), William T. Olive (b. 10.20.1864),
Lee Andrew Olive (b. 4.27.1868) (married 12.31.1893 to Mary Elizabeth Roach),
and Uel Edmond Olive (b. 7.21.1871).
Uel Olive (b. 10.28.1798 in North Carolina) (d. 8.6.1880). On 2.18.1818,
Uel married Mary Wester (b. 3.28.1798) (d. 1.20.1837) It is believed
that Uel was in Trigg County, KY during the 1820 census although he may have
been listed as Mel Olive. There children are: James M. Olive
(b. 11.24.1818), Abel Wester Olive (b. 8.30.1821), Mary Ann Olive (b. 8.30.1823),
Evelina Olive (b. 7.16.1825), Sara Jane Olive (b. 12.28.1825), Patsey M.
Olive (b. 11.27.1830) (d. 4.20.1834), Elizabeth Olive (b. 11.27.1830), Araminta
Amanda Olive (b. 8.12.1833), and William Eli Olive (b. 1.20.1837).
On 5.3.1837, Uel married Elizabeth Foy (d. 5.26.1876). There children
are: Stancy Olive (b. 6.5.1839), Susan Ellen Olive (b. 9.10.1840), Charlotte
Olive (b. 11.14.1841), and Margaret Matilda Olive (b. 5.22.1845).
Able Olive Sr. (b. 7.20.1765 Johnson County, NC) (d. 8.22.1822 Trigg County,
KY). He married Betty Ann Willis (b. 10.4.1767) (d. 9.27.1794) on 4.16.1785
in Wake County. Their five children were: Nancy Olive (b. 3.8.1786),
Joel Olive (b. 3.15 or 16. 1789), Jose Olive (b. 3.15 or 16. 1789) William
Olive (b. 4.11.1791), Ira Olive (b. 6.29.1793). Note: Joel and Jose
were born on different days, but it is not know who was born first.
Able Olive Sr. married Martha Patsey Minter (b.12.7.1775) (d. 1827 Trigg
County, KY) on 12.25.1795). Their nine children were: Able Olive Jr.
(b. 9.8.1796), Uel Olive (b. 10.28.1798 North Carolina) (d. 8.6.1880),
Jesse Olive (b. 5.1.1801), Richard Olive (b. 10.18.1803), Patsey Olive (b.
12.21.1805), John Olive (b. 12.22.1807), Mary Ann Olive (b. 1.2.1812), Salley
Olive (b. 11.7.1814), and James Olive (b. 6.4.1817).
James Olive Sr. (b. 10.3.1713 Gloucester County, NC) (d. 1.28.1805 Wake
County, NC) married Elizabeth Burt around 1743. They had seven children:
James Olive Jr., William Olive (b. 1746), Southwood Olive (b. about 1750-2),
John Olive (b. about 1754), Anthony Olive, Jesse Olive (b. about 1755), and
Abel Olive (b. 7.20.1765). They moved to Wake County, NC around 1740.
William Olive (b. England) had four known children: James Olive Sr.,
William Olive, Edward Olive, and Alexander Olive. The birth order is
not known. He arrived in America between 1696-1703. He was brought
to this country in exchange for land. He then worked as an indentured
servant for seven years doing leather work and tanning. (I was told
that after the seven years, he married the daughter of the man whom he worked
for. It makes a nice story, but I do not know if there is any truth
to it.)
Earlier Olives
This is where the research ends. It is supposed that before the Olives
entered England, that they came from the south of France. There is two
different coat-of-arms that belonged to Olive families in southern France.
This coat of arms is courtesy of Gilles Olive.
