History of the Library

  • The beginning of the Deming Public Library dates back to January 1917 when the Deming Women's Club formed a Library Association and established the first library in a room at City Hall.
  • Mrs. Maude C. Hoffman, President of the Board, acted as the first librarian. She received a salary of $15.00 a month. This first large purchase of books was 162 volumes of fiction bought from Miss Elizabeth Weaddell for $25.00 in June 1917.
  • In January 1921 a committee was appointed to investigate the purchase of lots for the library building. In February, the Board voted to buy the lots now occupied by the library for $900.00. Sometime between 1917 and 1921 the library has moved from the City Hall to the Armory. The Armory could no longer house it and the City was using the room formerly occupied by the library. In September 1921, The Library Association accepted a check of $750.00 from the city in lieu of any claim it might have on its room at the City Hall. But the Association lacked the funds to build on its newly acquired lots. It gratefully accepted the offer of a room at the Luna County Court House.
  • Until 1925 support of the library was obtained wholly by money-raising projects. Among these were membership drives, home talent plays, benefit picture shows, booths at the County Fairs and the purchase and resale of maple sugar.
  • In 1925 the Board of Education , the City Council, and the Luna County Commissioners each assumed some responsibility for the support of the library by budgeting $100.00 a year for that purpose. The first idea of a municipal library came in 1927. The Board "appointed a committee to talk to a lawyer in regard to interesting the City to finance the library". Evidently nothing came of this at that time.
  • It was on November 20, 1934 that a special meeting of the Board was called to discuss plans for a new building. It seems that by a regulation of the Public Works Administration, any community whose city engineer would volunteer to plan and supervise the building of a library, could obtain help for that project from W.P.A. Clarence Morgan and Joe Rogers offered their services and met with the Board. The present building was a direct result of that planning. It was accomplished by the combined efforts of Mr. Morgan and Mr. Rogers, the Library Association and the New Mexico Relief Administration. By the end of 1935 it was in use and dedicated at a Silver Tea on January 5, 1936.
  • By February 1989 automation plan at the library when the State Library provided us with anLSCA Title III Grant to purchase Library Corporation's Bibliofile microcomputer basic cataloging system. In 1990 we installed a Public Access Computerized Catalog through a private donation. The same year we installed a computer with modem to access bills in legislature through another grant from State Library. By March 1991 the automated Circulation System was already in operation. State Library quoted in a letter dated July 31, 1991-"...Deming Public Library has become a leader in automation in New Mexico for small to medium size libraries."
  • During the February,1996 meeting of the City Council, they approved that the Deming Public Library be changed to Marshall Memorial Library, in honor of the Marshall Family who had given great support to the library.
  • The library has come a long way in 80 years and we extend our most warm and heartfelt thanks to all who have contributed to this growth past, present and future. With the recent installation of our Internet library patrons can now access the world.
