Bronze Star Medal Citation

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to David Reed Hassall, Chief Electronics Technician, W-2, United States Navy. For meritorious service while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in armed conflict against the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong communist aggressors in the Republic of Vietnam from May 1970 to May 1971. While serving as Assistant Craft Superintendent in the Repair Department, United States Naval Support Facility, DaNang, Chief Warrant Officer Hassall performed his duties in an exemplary manner. He directly contributed to the progressive increase in effectiveness of small craft repairs. In addition, He demonstrated sound judgment and a high degree of technical ability during the repair of numerous Fleet units, civilian contract vessels and Vietnamese craft. His exceptional initiative and knowledge were amply exhibited as he designed and modified a Vietnamese landing craft for use as a mobile repair facility capable of traveling in any navigable waterway to provide support to Vietnamese craft in need of repair. Chief Warrant Officer Hassall's exemplary professionalism and devotion to duty under arduous working and living conditions and frequent enemy rocket and mortar attacks were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. The combat distinguishing device is authorized.
