There lived in the town of Slocum, Michigan, a man named Charles Jacobus w ho had been hit by tragedy. He and his wife had been burning brush to cle ar ground for a home. They had two children, one very little. They put t he little one in the shade of one of the brush piles, to take a nap. As th ese piles were about 10 feet high, it made for nice shade. After they h ad worked a few hours, they started to burn these piles, as some of them w ere old and dry, ready to burn. There were so many piles that they forg ot by which pile they had put the baby. By the time they started looking f or the baby, the fire was so hot that they could not get to the baby. Th at turned the mother's mind, and Charles never saw the mother again. He ro amed Michigan for a long time, hoping to find her, but was unable to.

As time went by, Charles met another woman, Mary Bark. She was part Indi an [Pottowatomy] and English. Charles was Pennsylvania Dutch and an Advent ist.
