Next Meeting
The next meeting of the Dog Obedience Club of Las Cruces will be a restaurant meeting! We will meet on Thursday, March 3, 2005, at 6:30 pm at the Bountiful Bakery on East Lohman (at the east end of the Petco/Marshall's/Ross shopping center). The restaurant serves sandwiches, salads, soups, some light dinner fare, and exotic pastries and coffees, and we will have a private meeting room. For those of you planning to skip the food, please join us at 7 pm since we need to leave the restaurant by 9 pm at the latest. Hope to see you there!
Obedience Curriculum Committee Meeting
There will be an obedience curriculum committee meeting immediately preceding our general membership meeting on March 3. The Obedience Curriculum Committee meeting will start at 5:30 pm, and will be held at the Bountiful Bakery. The committee has been charged with looking at the possibility of adopting the McConnell Beginning Family Dog Training and Puppy Primer books as textbooks for our Beginning Obedience and Puppy classes, respectively. This has to be settled on fairly quickly if we want to make this switch for our next set of classes, which begins in April. This means you should try to read these books before coming to the meeting on March 3! Contact Julie if you do not have a copy. The committee currently consists of Janet, Pam, Julie, Vic, Shannon and Steve; if you are interested in participating, please let one of them know.
Welcome to our Newest Member
We'd like to extend a warm welcome to our newest club member, Kay Suri. Kay is currently owned by several dogs, and she is affiliated with a rescue organization in El Paso. Welcome, Kay! We're glad to have you.
From the President
I would like to start off by thanking those of you who were able to attend our planning meeting on February 17. Second, I would like to thank Charlene and Jack for once again opening their home up to us and allowing us to have a great meeting. For those of you who didn't make it, let me start off with the new dress code we decided on - Bermuda shorts and flower shirts at every meeting! OK, maybe that one didn't get voted on. We did go over some great some ideas and I'm very excited about sharing them at the next meeting. Our classes are off to a great start and thank you to those of you who came to our first night of obedience classes to help out. See you all at the next meeting! And bring a friend.
Vic
MINUTES OF THE DOG OBEDIENCE CLUB OF LAS CRUCES
February 3, 2005
MEMBERS PRESENT: President Vic Villalobos, Vice-President Nancy Chanover, Secretary Marjorie A. Henson, Treasurer Charlene Curry; OTHER MEMBERS PRESENT: Pam Smith, Brian Owen, Steve Stochaj, Shannon Murry, Gayle Treakle, Gene Forsythe, Julie Goodrich, Janet Miller, Paul & Lisa Westbrook; VISITORS: Jennifer Yada, Kathy Stevens, Howard Davis, Elaine & Kat representing SNAP.
President Vic Villalobos called the meeting to order at 7:05. The visitors were introduced. Gene Forsythe moved & Gayle Treakle seconded that the minutes be accepted as presented in the newsletter. The motion passed.
TREASURER'S REPORT: The Treasurer's Report was made.
Vic Villalobos had arranged for an interesting presentation from SNAP, which was given by Elaine & Kat.
OLD BUSINESS:
Seminar Topics: Janet Miller presented a list of the preliminary costs. Bud Houston prefers the same 12 people working with their dogs on both days and there can be up to 15 working slots. We could have 2 1-day seminars. The hours of the seminar are 9-12 & 1-4. The caterer is set up to serve a cold meal (box lunch $6.50) one-day and a hot meal ($10.50) the next. If 2 1 day seminars, there would be a different topic each day. Perhaps charge $100/day with a 2-day working slot at $150. The participants would need to have open titles on their dogs. What do we as a club want to learn? A third option would be to add an instructors seminar which would require dogs of all levels. Bud is available for Tuesday & Wednesday. What should be for the 2 days? The open people would be more likely to fill the slots. The Auditor slots would be open. If they sign up for 2 days would get a price break. $100/day & $150 for both days. Auditors would be $35 for one day & $50 for both days. Eligible Club members that wanted working slots would pay $50 for 1 day & $75 for both days. Eligible club members that wanted to audit the seminar would pay the cost of the meals. Advertising will cost more than Janet thought. She has had brochures made up. The advertising in the Clean Run magazine is $600 for 3 months for a 1/4 page ad, $336 for 3 months for a 1/8-page ad. Brochures will be sent out in the agility premium lists and to the mailing lists. Do we need an ad in the Clean Run magazine? If all the working slots are filled the ad will be killed. The number of auditors is unlimited. Full payment will be required up front & is due 2 weeks before the seminar. Bud Houston will need a chauffeur every day & is staying at La Quinta.
CLASS SIGN UP: There was low sign up for agility. People who have called in have filled the classes. There is no interest in advanced classes, so there will be no Tuesday Agility classes. The classes will be held from 6:30-7:30 & 7:45-8:45. The beginning classes are full with 21 & 22 dogs in the classes. The puppy classes only have 10 or 11 in them. Kay will assist Julie in Tuesday's class and Paul will assist Vic as will Gene when he's in town. Safe Haven will be sending 2 people to watch, help & learn. Anyone who wants to help on Monday & Tuesday can come out between 6:30 & 6:45 to help with record checks so the classes can start at 7.
RETREAT: The retreat will be held on February 17 at Charlene Curry's house on Union and will start at 6:00.
MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS: The possibility of changing the membership requirements so not as many activities being required to apply for membership.
BOOK REVIEW: Steve Stochaj made a report on Dog Training in 10 Minutes Per Day by Carol Lea Benjamin. Steve also gave an agility-training tip.
New Rosters are available.
We still have no judges for agility or obedience.
Kay Suri was voted in as a new member.
Brags were made.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:29.
