Next Meeting
The next meeting of the Dog Obedience Club of Las Cruces will be a restaurant meeting! We will meet on Thursday, September 2, 2004, at 6:30 pm at the Bountiful Bakery on East Lohman (at the east end of the Petco/Marshall's/Ross shopping center). The restaurant serves sandwiches, salads, soups, some light dinner fare, and exotic pastries and coffees, and we will have a private meeting room. For those of you planning to skip the food, you should probably join us around 7 pm since we need to leave the restaurant by 9 pm at the latest. Hope to see you there!
Fall Class Registration is Next Week!
Registration for our fall session of agility and obedience classes will take place on Wednesday August 18 in the Pearl Higgins Room of the Branigan Library. This is the same room (upstairs) where we held registration for the Spring 2004 class session. Returning student and agility class registration will take place at 6:15 pm, while new obedience students will register at 7 pm. Please plan to arrive shortly before 6 pm to help with set-up and stay as long as you can to work the payment, vaccine check, and collar/lead sales tables. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!
Dues are Due
All club members must pay their annual dues before being eligible to vote in our elections at the October meeting. As a reminder, the dues are $10 for individuals and $12 for families. Please give your check to Janet Miller, the club Treasurer, or mail it to her at 48 Villa Lucia, La Luz, NM 88337.
From the Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee has met, and would like to present the slate of officers for 2005. According to our by-laws, "additional nominations may be made at the September meeting by any member in attendance, provided that the person so nominated does not decline when his or her name is proposed, and provided further that if the proposed candidate is not in attendance at the meeting, the individual(s) making the proposal shall present to the Secretary a written statement from the proposed candidate signifying willingness to be a candidate." Voting will take place at our October meeting; nominations from the floor CANNOT be made at that meeting. The proposed slate of 2005 officers and Board members at large is as follows:
President: Vic Villalobos
Vice President: Nancy Chanover
Secretary: Marjorie Henson
Treasurer: Charlene Curry
Board of Directors: Gene Forsythe, Brian Owen, and Gayle Treakle
From the President
It's that time again! No...not time for Girl Scout cookies, time for our obedience trial. Again we will be asking for some of your time to help with the trial in any way you can. Please plan to attend the next meeting where we will be making final arrangements or even better, contact Margie Henson at 524-3215 or Pam Smith at 525-4398 and volunteer now before all the good jobs are gone!
Until then,
Cheryl
MINUTES OF THE DOG OBEDIENCE CLUB OF LAS CRUCES
August 5, 2004
MEMBERS PRESENT: Vice-President Pam Smith, Secretary Marjorie A. Henson, Treasurer Janet Miller; OTHER MEMBERS: Charlene Curry, Lynn de Beauclair, Gene Forsythe, Julie Goodrich, Shannon Murray, Brian Owen, Gayle Treakle, Vic Villalobos; VISITORS: Pat and Don Jonker, Lisa Westerbrook
Vice President Pam Smith called the meeting to order at 7:30. Introductions were made.
Julie Goodrich moved and Lynn de Beauclair seconded that the minutes of the July meeting be accepted as presented in the newsletter. The motion passed.
The mail was presented. Thank you note from Pam Smith for the life membership.
TREASURER'S REPORT: The month of July had no income and gross receipt taxes had to be paid.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
AGILITY LIGHTS: Because there will be no Agility Trial this year, Pam has decided not to pursue the changing of the lights at this time. The electrician was in at the beginning of the summer to replace some light bulbs and others have gone out since. The new system would run @ $1200 with 12 halogen bulbs. These are more efficient so the electric bill would go down.
OLD BUSINESS:
NEW BUSINESS:
LIBRARY AND CLUB HISTORY: Charlene Curry has all the library materials and the club history (scrapbooks, clippings etc.) The Scrapbooks need to be fixed as they are deteriorating. Anyone who might be able to identify pictures from the early years is welcome to help. There are books from the 60's & 70's that she's not sure anyone in the club is using. How long are we going to keep them? A list was provided of the books in the club library and if anyone would like to borrow any of them, please let Charlene know. Also if anyone has any of the club's stuff please let Charlene know.
PET EXPO: The Animal Control Officers are having a pet exp October 23. The club\b could rent a booth & as a possible fundraiser have a very easy low-level agility course for people to try out. Brian Owen went to Del Mar and they had something similar. Charlene Curry will see if the club can have more room that just a booth for agility fun course and perhaps a bobbing for hot dogs. The Animal Control Officers will be doing all the advertising. We could hand out information about all the club's activities including Therapies. Shannon Murray moved, Gayle Treakle seconded to pursue this and the motion passed.
NEXT MEETING: The next meeting is September 2 at Saint James. The possibilities of having it at were discussed. Vic Villalobos moved and Gayle Treakle seconded to hold the meetings at this restaurant. Discussion stated the disadvantage of not being able to bring dogs to the meeting for socialization also we have been making a donation to Saint James for use of their room. Someone checked with the management to see if the room in the restaurant would be available. Vic amended the motion to a trial period of 6 months with Gayle seconding the amendment. The amendment passed and the motion passed.
Brags were made.
Julie Goodrich moved for the meeting to adjourn.
