MEXICO YEAR-ROUND RAILS-TO-TRAILS WALK

This event qualifies for the AVA Railroad Heritage Walk program.
This event is a 5 km (3.1 miles) or 13 km (8 miles) YRW with the
start-finish point at Cloudcroft Chamber of Commerce building located in
the log cabin building at the east end of Zenith Park on Highway 82
opposite Cloudcroft Elementary School. Phone Number--575-682-2733 Hours
of operation 10AM to 5PM, Monday-Saturday.
DIRECTIONS ...
To the Cloudcroft Chamber of Commerce log cabin. If arriving on US
Highway 82 from the east, the Chamber log cabin will be on the left just
after topping the hill. If arriving on US Highway 82 from the west, the
Chamber log cabin will be on the right after passing by Zenith Park on
the right and across the street from the Cloudcroft Elementary School.
Ask for the Volksmarch or Walk box.
START-FINISH TIMES
... Start anytime between 10:00
AM and 2:00 PM for the 13 KM course and 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM for the 5 KM
course. Finish before 5:00 PM. Closed Sundays, New Years Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
TRAIL RATING ... Trail is rated 3 and is NOT suitable
for strollers and wheelchairs.
COURSE DESCRIPTION ... Course is on improved
trails and a deserted railbed. Some steep inclines are involved.
Altitude is 7550-8700 feet. During winter months, call start point for
snow conditions. Trail is in Lincoln National Forest and consists of
mostly pine and aspen forested areas with occasional meadows. 5KM trail
passes by two historic rail trestles and the 13KM trail passes by one.
No water or restrooms available on trail. Participants must carry their
own water.
START POINT ... Ask Chamber
personnel for the “Volksmarch Box.”
CHECK POINTS ... are unattended. Record each message on your start
envelope.
FINISH POINT ... Ask for the box, return
the envelope, and stamp your record book. Return the box to the Chamber
personnel.
