Hidden away in the Dragoon Mountains of Cochise County, this delightfully picturesque and shady spot was a favorite Apache campground for centuries.  Cochise and his Band settled in to a peaceful existence here when this mountain range, the Sulphur Springs Valley, and the Chiricahua Mountains on the other side of the valley were set aside as a reservation for his people.

Cochise and his band were in constant danger from the distrustful settlers in the surrounding lands, and this spot provided high rock outcrops from which they could keep watch.  Cochise died in peace and is buried here in an unmarked spot.  The failure of officials in Washington to honor the agreement which created the Chiricahua Reservation was a primary cause of subsequent Apache unrest.

This is a beautiful shady spot, with a nature trail, a longer hiking trail, and very pleasant picnicking and camping facilities.

As you approach the Stronghold you will wind your way along a lovely creek, crossing it several times.  Some of this is private land, and in fact a few acres of it are for sale right now

Don’t Forget to watch for wildlife
