THOMAS E. CYRS, ED.D.

Tom Cyrs is a highly sought after speaker and trainer in the fields of distance learning and college teaching. He is well known for his energetic, dynamic, dramatic, and thought-provoking presentations, use of examples and stories, visualization with puppets and magic illusion, and high levels of audience participation.

For the past 30 years, Tom has conducted hundreds of distance learning and college teaching workshops and presentations nationally and internationally. Participants in these workshops have come from over 32 countries. He is the 1995 recipient of the Mildred B. and Charles A. Wedemeyer Award for outstanding contributions in the application of distance education in North America jointly presented by the University of Wisconsin-Madison and The Pennsylvania State University at the Annual Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Tom is the author of many articles as well as several major texts: Teaching at a Distance with the Merging Technologies: An Instructional Systems Approach; Teleclass Teaching: A Resource Guide, second edition; Essential Skills for College Teaching: An Instructional Systems Approach, third edition; and Handbook for the Design of Instruction in Pharmacy Education.

Tom is a Professor Emeritus at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He has taught graduate courses in distance learning and college teaching aimed primarily at faculty and graduate teaching assistants. He can be reached at:

EUGENIA D. CONWAY, M.A.

Jean is currently assistant director for faculty development and coordinator of graphics for the Teaching Academy at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She is also Vice President for Staff Development for Educational Development Associates.

As assistant director for faculty development, she collaborates with the director on faculty development programming and instructional design programs. She presents local, regional, and national workshops and seminars in distance education and visual thinking.

In her capacity as coordinator of graphics, she works with faculty to prepare presentation materials for both traditional and television teaching. These materials include hand-produced original displays, computer-generated presentations, electronic images for video, and accompanying study guides. In addition to classroom material, she prepares artwork for publication, creates poster sessions, and designs printed materials.

She earned a B.A. in art in May 1975, a B.F.A. in communicaton graphics in December 1990, and an M.A. in art with an emphasis in communication graphics in May 1991 from West Texas State University (now West Texas A&M University).

During her free time, she creates bonsai trees, hikes and backpacks, and occasionally chases total solar eclipses.
