Introduction

Too often institutions get involved in distance learning without a real consideration of how this new program will affect the overall institution and its missions. It is often assumed that courses can be transported to a distance learning environment pretty much as they are currently taught. Administrators with this attitude are finding that the Achilles' Heel of distance learning is faculty training and adequate support services to insure top quality programs. As the distance learning market becomes more and more competitive, student consumers will select those programs that have been designed or modified for distance delivery instead of those programs that exemplify the "talking head" instructor. This workshop will explore policy and administrative issues that can make a distance learning program successful before it has begun.

Workshop Learning Performance Objectives

The participant will identify the most appropriate policy and administrative issues to be addressed by the administration for their new distance learning program.

The participant will explain the concept of market niche and identify it for their new program.

The participant will identify the priority of distance learning within the existing strategic plan of the institution.

The participant will develop a plan of action to address the issues indentified during this workshop.
