Gray Wolf
Lobo

The Lobo or gray wolf of the American southwest has recently been reintroduced in some areas. Though most authorities believed it to be extinct in the wild prior to reintroduction, I am one of those who have some evidence to the contrary. Although they are very rare, I believe there are still some holdouts among the original wild population. Gray wolves have never been anything but a rare sighting in the American southwest since the 1930s becoming less and less in the time since then. I remember seeing several in the wild in far southern New Mexico in 1961. I also examined two that were shot and killed in Brewster Co. Texas near Big Bend in 1977 or 1978.
