Congregational Life and Outreach Committee Minutes

MINUTES

Present:  Carissa Brealey, Cindy Tafoya, Tracy Geiger

Absent:  Larry Felhauer, Donna Mathis, Dylan Anderson, Rusty Smith

This month’s meeting was predominantly a brainstorming session to plan the CL&O events calendar for 2009.

 1.  We discussed the vision for CL&O for 2009.  Carissa and Cindy expressed an interest in more social, off-site activities that would enhance the spiritual growth that happens within the church.  We’d like to use these events as a way to appeal to visitors, Salt & Light families who do not necessarily attend FPC, and to encourage involvement from the current congregation.  Tracy has a similar vision for CE, and suggested that CL&O and CE combine resources and work together as much as possible.

 2.  Event thoughts and ideas:

            a.  Emphasis on outdoor activities during appropriate times of year.

            b.  Hold events at least once a season but as often as monthly.

            c.  Design events such that they appeal to all demographics of the congregation, or

alternate events in the calendar so there is something for everyone at least once

     a season.

d.  New Saturday night service starting in March timeframe may bring in more

young families.  Starting a young families group in conjunction with these

     services is a good idea.

e.  For food-based events, committee provides main dish.

 3.  Calendar of Events brainstorm results:

February:  Sweetheart dance in Watkins Hall on Valentine’s Day

April:  Old-fashioned hymn sing and church supper after church (salad theme)

June (early?):  Family camping trip (Elephant Butte, Aguirre Springs???)

            July:  Drive-in movie

August:  Blessing of the Backpacks during church service before school starts

            October:  Pumpkin Patch event

Other ideas/activities to remember:  Diablos game, Wet ‘n Wild, graduation gifts

and special fellowship for graduates, softball league, summer movie nights

 4.  Actions:

            a.  Tracy will create and send out mailers about Sweetheart Dance to entire

congregation and to Salt & Light families, and put something in this week’s

                 bulletin.

            b.  Carissa will say something about the Sweatheart Dance during Minute for

     Mission on Sunday, Feb. 8th.

c.  All committee members and Tracy will keep an eye out for Valentine’s

decorations at Hobby Lobby, Dollar Store, etc.  Tracy will order remaining

needed supplies from Sam’s Club (Click ‘n Pull).

d.  Anyone willing to help decorate for the dance should be at Watkins Hall at

9:00 a.m. that morning to set up.

e.  Carissa will e-mail Linda and request Watkins Hall and the kitchen for all day

     on Feb. 14th.

f.  In March, Carissa will go to a choir practice and ask for volunteers to lead the

hymn sing in April; will also talk to Winnie Quinsy about playing keyboard.

g.       Cindy will pick up Diablos schedule.

 5.  Meeting ended in prayer.
