May 15, 2008

Moderator Robert McPherson opened the meeting with prayer at 7:05 p.m.

PRESENT: Robert McPherson, Alice Cooper, Mary Ellen Gregg, Olivier Huebo, Jean Rhodes, Rosemary Maddox, Mike Bartholomew, Doris Morgan, Winnie Quinzi, and Darla Topley.

EXCUSED: Katie Grandle, Rusty Smith, Clint Woodward, Jean Bernard Nganou, and Lynn Lawson-Jones.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Doris Morgan's name should have been included in excused absences last month. The minutes were approved as corrected.

TREASURER'S REPORT: Expenses from April 19 through May 15 were $986.49. The Deacons' Fund balance as of May 15 is $2,931.44.

PASTOR'S REPORT: The pastor was not present. Robert reported that Rev. Story was pleased with the handling of the e-mail special meeting to establish that the Youth Deacon position is an additional position.

CORRESPONDENCE: Thank-you notes were received from the Austin family and from the Community of Hope.

 COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Ushering:  The ushering assignment sheet was passed around so that the remaining vacancies could be filled. Alice will send a copy of the amended assignment sheet to all deacons. Choir members will help during the summer as needed.

Transportation:  Problems with one of the vans was discussed. Darla, who works for Enterprise Car Rental, says it is possible to get a 15-passenger van with less than 50,000 miles from them at a reasonable price. The Administration team is looking into this. Cruise control can be installed in the van that is now without it.

Special Events:  No report.

Soup Kitchen:  Several people didn't show up to work recently and didn't call in. Rosemary and Winnie will work an extra shift in June.

Transient Meals:  The supply cabinet has recently been restocked and brown bags filled.

Visitation:   No report.

Building and Grounds: Most of the needed repairs have been made. The problem with the refrigerator was determined to be a loose wire, and this has been fixed. There will be a Work Day Saturday, June 7. Bob Paul will get a list of tasks needing to be done published in "Good News."

Columbarium:  Information will be presented to the Session on Tuesday, May 20, with a request to speak during Minute for Missions. This was planned for Sunday, May 25; however, due to the Memorial Day Holiday, this presentation will be postponed to June 1. Informational posters will be placed in the Narthex and in the Fellowship Hall.

Congregational Life:  No report.

Christian Education:  The recent garage sale brought in $1,500. Vacation Bible School is all set.

Jean Rhodes recommended a book entitled "Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters" as a text for a parenting class.

Missions:  At the Missions Team meeting Tuesday night, Dutch Matkin read  an email received by Beverly Briggs from her daughter, Kim Lytton, in Kunming, China.  Kim assured her mother that they were unhurt in the recent earthquake.

The Missions Team will donate $200 to Vacation Bible School for the purchase of 5-gallon plastic water bottles. The bottles will be delivered to Casas por Cristo for use in areas in Juarez where clean water is not available.

Music and Worship:  Choir Director Kelly Temple plans to attend a choral workshop in Concordia, Minnesota, July 19-23. Special music has been arranged for all except four Sundays while the choir is out for the summer. The choir will begin rehearsing again on August 20.

 OLD BUSINESS:

Hamburger Fry. After a discussion about potential scheduling conflicts, it was agreed to set the hamburger fry for Sunday, October 19, subject to Rusty being available on that date.

 NEW BUSINESS:

The Deacons Team has been assigned to man the coffee fellowship on June 15. Darla volunteered   for the assignment.

ADJOURNMENT: It was agreed that we will take our usual one-month summer hiatus during the month of June. Therefore at 8:05 p.m. the meeting adjourned to Thursday, July 24, with the Mizpah Benediction.
