DEACON MINISTRY TEAM MINUTES

December 11, 2008

The meeting was opened with prayer by Moderator Robert McPherson at 7:15 p.m.

PRESENT: Robert McPherson, Ralph Miller, Doris Morgan, Jean Rhodes, Rosemary Maddox, Clint Woodward, Rev. Norm Story, and guests/incoming Deacons Ken Osborne, Janice Sherman, Austin Breck, and Martha Mitchell.

ABSENT: Winnie Quinzi, Tracy Geiger, Lynn Lawson-Jones, Debbie Austin, Katie Grandle, Olivier Huebo, Jean Bernard Nganou, Darla Topley, Mike Bartholomew, Rusty Smith, and Cindy Tafoya.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the November 20 meeting are in error in stating that Katie Grandle was designated to do a Minute for Missions on November 30. The minutes were approved as corrected.

PASTOR'S REMARKS: Rev. Story spoke of the unique position Ushers/Greeters are in to make visitors feel welcome. He asked that they look for opportunities to hand out the booklet "Being a Presbyterian" and membership applications, stating that people usually don't join a church unless someone invites them to do so.

MODERATOR'S REMARKS: Robert thanked the Deacons for their work, and expressed hope that the Nominating Committee will come up with two new Deacons, one for the Class of 2009 and one for the Class of 2010.

 CORRESPONDENCE: None.

 COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Treasurer's Report: We have no treasurer at the present time, and there were no financial reports in the mailboxes. Rev. Story said a new bookkeeper, Michelle Del Rio, was hired last Tuesday and the situation should soon be under control. He will ask Michelle to send each Deacon a copy of the financial report when it is available.

Ushering:  Rosemary needs a substitute for the east door for December 21; Ralph will take care of this. Clint pointed out that we have no ushers for the entire month of January. Ralph agreed to continue as Deacon Captain for January; Ken Osborne volunteered to take the south door, Austin Breck tentatively will take the west door, with confirmation by December 19. Rev. Story said January 4 will be a shared service with the Hispanic Church, and perhaps someone from there could help usher.

Transportation:  No report.

Special Events:   Christmas Baskets: Clint said the high school group will come on December 19 around 2 p.m. to fill baskets, and volunteers will meet at the church on Sunday, December 21, at 1:30 p.m. to make deliveries.

Soup Kitchen:  Jean said everything is going well, but a new Chairman is needed. Austin Breck volunteered for the position, contingent upon job-training since this is new to him.

Transient Meals:  No report.

Visitation:  No report.

Building & Grounds: Jean said they are still working on a sign for the Hispanic Church. Robert saw an ad on the internet about sandblasted signs which were attractive; he will pass this information on to Bob Paul.

Christian Education:  No report.

Music and Worship:  Doris said the organ recital to be presented in February was discussed. Rev. Story added that this coming Sunday is the children's musical, the following week is the cantata, and the next week the Oņate High School choir will provide the music. On January 4 Rev. Hawkins and Rev. Al Kissling are putting together a Spanish/English service, and the following week Blaine Goss will fill the pulpit.

Administration:  Ken Osborne reported that time was spent in bringing the new members up to speed.

 OLD BUSINESS:

Christmas Baskets:  See above under Special Events. Clint said there has been a good response to the stars on the paper Christmas trees; the last count was around $1,200. Ralph said the tree at the south door needs to be repositioned to be more visible. Food donations can be brought to Salt & Light or taken to the office on December 17. Two baskets were provided to members of the Spanish congregation last week, and ten more baskets will be filled: One more for the Spanish congregation, four for families from the Children's Garden, and five for Hospice. They are also planning to give Walmart's gift cards. The cost of filling a basket is around $200.

Ken said two of the families have newborns and they need clothing. Rosemary recommended the Gospel Rescue Mission Clothing Room, where gracious Spanish-speaking ladies try very hard to accommodate the needs of everyone who comes through the door.

 NEW BUSINESS:

Election of New Treasurer:  Robert spoke of the need for a new treasurer to replace Mary Ellen Gregg. The duties include picking up the financial report from the office and presenting it at the meetings. No action was taken.

ADJOURNMENT: At 7:45 the meeting was adjourned to January 15, 2009, by reciting the Mizpah Benediction.
