DEACON MINISTRY TEAM MINUTES

January 15, 2009

PRESENT: Clint Woodward, Janice Sherman, Ralph Miller, Dylan Anderson, Marianne Maley,  Mike Bartholomew,  Austin Breck,  Rev. Norm Story,  Jean Bernard Nganou,  Winnie Quinzi,  Cindy Tafoya,                               Rusty Smith,  Rosemary Maddox,  and Martha Mitchell.

EXCUSED:  Olivier Heubo

ABSENT:      Lynn Lawson-Jones,  Mark Geiger

The meeting was opened at 7:05 p.m. with prayer by Moderator Clint Woodward.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the December 11, 2008 meeting were approved as submitted.

PASTOR'S REMARKS:  Rev. Story discussed the importance of the Shepherd's Program and answered questions about the program. He said Clint will bring any suggestions from the Deacons to the Session Retreat at the end of the month, and Deacons are invited to the Elders/Deacons get-together at the church on Saturday, February 21.

MODERATOR'S REMARKS: Clint announced his plan to speed up the tempo of the meetings, and asked that Committee Reports be limited to things that really need to come before the Board of Deacons and are not contained in Committee minutes. Action items and the agenda will be sent online, so Deacons should check their email frequently. He would also like to see Deacons become more active in the Church and the community, and suggested the following: Riding along on the Sunday van pickups; sitting at table with the children at Salt and Light; or signing on with a cooking or clean-up team for Salt and Light.

CORRESPONDENCE: A thank-you letter was received from Brandy Lee Hernandez for the food baskets and Walmart’s gift card. Also a note was received from Tracy Geiger stating that Mary Ann Pelking needs a ride to Memorial Medical Center on the morning of January 21st. Anyone who can help, contact Tracy.

TREASURER'S REPORT: Since we do not have a treasurer, Clint made this report. We have a balance of $3,361.22.

 COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Ushering:   An ushering schedule for 2009 was passed around, and all vacancies were filled for the months of February and March. The schedule will be circulated as needed to keep it current.

Transportation:  Rusty invited anyone who is interested to drive or ride along on Sunday mornings. He is picking up three people on the present schedule. It was suggested that an item be placed in the Bulletin to ensure that everyone knows that this service is available.

Special Events:   No report.

Soup Kitchen:  Rosemary worked at the soup kitchen on Wednesday, and reported that more than 200 people were fed and everything went smoothly.

Transient Meals:  Cindy reported this program is doing fine.

Visitation:  Cindy is doing hospital visits. Winnie has a list of people who need home visits and will email the list to Marianne, who is new to this committee. Rev. Story asked that the list be given to him for review.

Building and Grounds: No report.

Congregational Life:  Cindy spoke about planned events, details of which can be found in the minutes of that Committee.

Christian Education:  No report.

Missions:   Janice reported that the Missions Team worked on plans for the visit by the Trudells, Bible translators serving in Africa, who will arrive on February 21.

Music and Worship:  Marianne said Tom Trenney, an organist, is coming to give a workshop on Saturday afternoon, February 14 and will direct a choir concert on Sunday, February 15, in which other choirs will be invited to participate. After the concert a Buster Keaton silent movie will be shown, and Mr. Trenney will supply the organ music.

Administration:  Mike reported that a non-church group has asked to reserve a room for next Christmas, but the request will not be acted on until October so that no church activity will be shut out. Also, when any special collection is taken, someone from Administration will oversee the handling of the donations.

 OLD BUSINESS:

New Treasurer: Clint announced that because there were so few Deacons at the December meeting, the selection of a new Treasurer was postponed to this meeting. Janice agreed to take the position, and she was elected by acclamation.

Hospice Baskets:  Clint thanked everyone who helped with the Hospice baskets, stating that delivering the baskets to needy families was a humbling experience.

ADJOURNMENT: At 7:45 p.m. the meeting was adjourned by reciting the Mizpah Benediction.
