DEACON MINISTRY TEAM MINUTES
April 16, 2009
PRESENT: Moderator Clint Woodward, Austin Breck, Janice Sherman, Ralph Miller, Theresa Armendariz, Marianne Maley, Paul Vaughan, Rosemary Maddox, Mark Geiger, and Jean Bernard Nganou.
EXCUSED: Ken Osborne, Mike Bartholomew, Olivier Huebo, Winnie Quinzi, and Lynn Lawson-Jones.
ABSENT: Rusty Smith, Cindy Tafoya, Martha Mitchell, and Dylan Anderson.
PASTOR'S REMARKS: The Pastor was not present.
MODERATOR'S REMARKS: Clint commended the Deacons on their efforts and encouraged them to continue their good work.
CORRESPONDENCE: Several items of correspondence were received asking for funds. No action was taken on these requests.
TREASURER'S REPORT: Janice discussed the Deacons Report for the Quarter Ending March 31, 2009, saying there are many items which are not clear, and other Deacons agreed. It was decided that she and Clint will bring this report to the upcoming Session Meeting for discussion and clarification. Janice pointed out that due to having Communion on Maundy Thursday, with no offering, the Deacons' income for April may be less than normal.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Ushers: Ralph. All usher slots are filled through June. Theresa and Rosemary volunteered to serve as captains for the months of May and June respectively. Ralph urged all ushers to acquire and wear name tags.
Transportation: Mark. No problems. Paul asked about the procedure for reserving a van to take youth to El Paso for some of the Diablos' games. Mark will discuss this with Rusty and advise Paul.
Soup Kitchen: Rosemary. On Wednesday, April 9, 256 people were fed. The kitchen ran out of soup but there was plenty of other food and nobody went away hungry.
Transient Meals: No report.
Visitation: Clint. He learned that there has been no official shut-in list for about three years. Pastor Story has directed that the Shepherds make an effort to learn which of their Sheep are shut-ins, and give this information to Clint so a list can be compiled.
Building and Grounds: Austin. There will be a work day on Saturday, April 18, 8:00 a.m to 12:00 noon. There will be coffee and doughnuts. Paul offered his electronic owl as a means of keeping birds out of the trees overhanging sidewalks.
Congregational Life: Clint. There will be a hymn sing and potluck salad luncheon in the courtyard on Sunday, April 19, after services. Congregational Life will provide tuna salad, and those attending are asked to bring their favorite salad or dessert. A campout at Aguirre Springs is planned for the Memorial Day weekend.
Christian Education: Theresa. This team is concentrating their efforts on the Discipleship Program. Team members have visited other meetings recently to discuss this opportunity of continuing spiritual growth. Theresa gave a general overview of the program and answered questions from the Deacons.
Missions: Rosemary. At last Tuesday's meeting the Mission Budget Expenses Report was discussed and questions were raised. Moderator Alex Burr will take up these questions with the appropriate person in the office. The team was pleased to learn that the Lyttons have moved to Biejing, the capital of China, where there will be more opportunity to emphasize their music ministry.
Music and Worship: Marianne. She felt the service of Communion by Intinction on Maundy Thursday could have been improved by a smoother flow of traffic toward the Communion servers. Possible methods for correcting this problem were discussed. Also discussed was the matter of replacing the current choir sound board.
Administration: No report.
OLD BUSINESS: Marianne reported that church members provided the Huebos, recent new parents, with meals for ten days in a row.
ADJOURNMENT: At 8:00 p.m. the meeting was adjourned to May 21 with the Mizpah Benediction.
