DEACONS MINISTRY TEAM MINUTES
September 17, 2009
The meeting was opened with prayer by Ralph Miller at 7:00 p.m.
PRESENT: Moderator Rusty Smith, Theresa Armendariz, Janice Sherman, Mike Bartholomew, Martha Mitchell, Marianne Maley, Rosemary Maddox, Ralph Miller, Dylan Anderson, Winnie Quinzi, and one visitor, Carissa Brealey-Rood.
EXCUSED: Austin Breck, Lynn Lawson Jones, Mick Geiger, and Paul Vaughan
ABSENT: Cindy Tafoya and Ken Osborne
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the August 20, 2009 meeting were approved as published.
PASTOR'S REMARKS: The Pastor was not present.
CONGREGATIONAL LIFE REMARKS: Carissa said this committee is hosting two events and could use some help with setting up. On October 4th, there will be an international potluck lunch, set-up time probably Sunday morning; and on November 15th, a Thanksgiving Dinner at 5:00 p.m., with set up immediately preceding the dinner. Advertisements will be posted on campus and they are hoping to have college students attend. Rusty said the Transportation team will advertise rides available from campus.
MODERATOR'S REMARKS: Rusty has passed three names on to the Nominating Committee.
CORRESPONDENCE: Thank-you notes were received from two families who received emergency assistance from the Deacons. Also received was an email from Jean Bernard Nganou, and a brochure, "Cultivating Compassion," from Adventures in Caring, Santa Barbara, CA.
TREASURER'S REPORT: Janice said we are doing well as we were down only $59.92 this month. She is in the process of putting the financial report on a spreadsheet.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Ushers: Ushering slots are filled for the rest of the month of September, and a sign-up sheet was passed for the first two weeks of October. After a discussion on various methods of getting the choir offering into the locked bag and safe, it was decided to try this method: The Deacon Captain will go get the choir offering basket a few minutes before services begin and place it on the bell table. The usher on the east side will pick it up.
Transportation: Ebenezer Tumban is back in town and has volunteered to help with transportation; a new schedule will be drawn up. A notice about van transportation has been in the Bulletin but we don't have any new riders yet. We are still looking into a wheel-chair option for the van. The Administration Committee will explore the financial feasibility of this once the different options are presented.
Special Events: The hamburger fry is coming up on October 18th. Martha has a shopping list and estimates 250 people will be served. Ralph volunteered to donate a case of green chile, and Winnie will donate money to buy 32 pounds of potato salad. Martha will bring cake mixes to the deacons' October 15 meeting and hand them out. She will also make sure the donation baskets and contribution envelopes are available. Winnie pointed out that arrangements should be made for someone from Administration to be on hand to count the money.
Soup Kitchen: Rosemary said 216 people were served on Wednesday, September 9. The team was somewhat shorthanded but everybody just worked a little harder. Rusty will see that the team list is updated.
Transient Meals: Winnie said the shelves are fully stocked.
Visitation: Marianne has called on people that she knows are in the hospital.
Building and Grounds: No report.
Congregational Life: See Congregational Life presentation above.
Christian Education: Salt and Light started three weeks ago and is going well. This team is still trying to hire a part-time person. Theresa said the Discipleship Project is still providing books and videos for people to check out.
Missions: No report.
Music and Worship: Marianne said David Klement has asked for an outside speaker to be installed so that when the choir is standing outside they can hear what is going on inside. Rusty thought this would also encourage late-comers to enter. Wiring up the existing speaker in the Narthex was discussed.
Administration: Mike reported the passing of a motion to approve the hiring of a part-time Christian Education Program Coordinator, whose salary will be paid from the proceeds of the sale of some undesignated stock donated to the church. They discussed the necessity of reviewing the by-laws at the next meeting.
OLD BUSINESS:
Casa de Peregrinos. Rosemary reported that the food donations have been increasing weekly. Last week Dylan and Austin and his son helped carry the donations to her car.
NEW BUSINESS:
Collection of Salt and Light registration funds: After discussion it was agreed that a reminder should be sent out, either by mail or with the child on Wednesday, to people who have not paid.
Benefit Yard Sale: Rev. Al Kissling is having a yard sale on Friday, October 9, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, October 10, 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at his home at 586 Canyon Point Road, across from Mountain View Hospital. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Spanish Congregation. Rev. Kissling would welcome any deacons who want to come and help with the sale.
Request from Prison Family Services for food and clothing: Rusty said this request has been taken care of.
ADJOURNMENT:
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m. with the recitation of the Mizpah Benediction.
