Christian Composer to Describe work

Warner Hutchison, Emeritus Professor and Composer-in-Residence at New Mexico State University, will discuss some of his compositions that have a biblical background at the First Presbyterian Church in Watkins Hall at 7:00PM Friday.

Hutchison has had over fifty of his works published for orchestra, band, choir, electronic music, chamber music, and the stage. They have been performed at the Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, and Carnegie Hall, as well as in many other places closer to home.

Hutchison has selected six excerpts from some of his many CDs to play and discuss in detail. He will explain the Biblical background for the pieces, something of the techniques used to create them, and describe the effect that he was trying to produce.

Some, like the "Gloria" from Mass (produced in 1992), is music which has a tradition dating back to the 14th century. Another excerpt, Apocalypse I part 3 "War in Heaven," is based on prophetic passages from the books of Daniel and Revelation. It is particularly relevant today. Hutchison says, "Not all music is beautiful; some is ugly, portraying violent, disturbing emotions."

Other excerpts, such as "So in All Things" written especially for the First Presbyterian Church, is more pleasant and harmonious.

The discussion, to which everybody is invited, will take place at 7 PM in Watkins Hall on the campus of the church, following a pot-luck dinner which starts at 6 PM. Maps are available on the internet at www.zianet.com/fpc.
