Music and Worship Minutes
MEETING MINUTES – AUGUST 11, 2009
Attendance: Melanie Grant, Florence Hamilton, Joanne Kersting, Marianne Maley, Wayne Maley, Howard Smolleck, Rev Norm Story, Marsha Topley
Not present: Lois Cook, Mick Gieger, Lynn Jones, Jim Parks
The meeting opened at 7:00 PM with a reading from Psalms 96 and prayer.
There were no changes, so July 14 minutes remain as distributed. Financial statement shows over budget expenditures for Copyright License and Pulpit Supply because those expenses were concentrated during the last six weeks.
Communion was served to 179 at the August 2 service.
A motion was made and passed to affirm as printed in The Lantern the thank you to Kelly Temple for her service as choir director.
A motion was made and passed to establish the position of Director of Music.
It was announced that David A Klement had just this afternoon accepted the new position. He will immediately begin planning the fall choir program. Welcoming steps were discussed. For the record, the announcement summary is attached below.
On Saturday August 15 an informal alternative once a month service will be presented. The message will be the same as on Sunday morning in a more relaxed setting.
Volunteers are still needed to assist with Sanctuary decorations.
Team member Jim Parks sent a report that the sound system change plan is continuing.
Upcoming Team responsibilities; meet at 8:30 AM to prepare Communion on September 6
The meeting was closed with prayer at 7:40 PM
_______________ WAM 08-12
David A Klement will join our staff as Director of Music to share with us in what he sees as an exciting, spirit-filled outreach. An experienced music ministry professional with more than 20 years of music leadership, David, his wife, Margaret Goehring, and daughters Dorothy and Emma, have recently relocated here.
David has a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and Literature from Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio and a Master of Music, Conducting, from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. He also served as Head Chorister at the St Thomas Choir School in New York City.
He comes to us from Rochester, New York, where he oversaw a staff of 12 professional musicians at the Asbury First United Methodist Church. He administered the entire music and drama program, including four weekly services, an annual concert series and two theatrical productions for the congregation of 2300 members. He also founded and was artistic director of the Rochester Boys Choir.
He has been an adjunct professor at Eastman School of Music; Conducting Fellow at Dartmouth College, directing the Handel Society [a 150 voice community orchestra choir]; and a resident advisor at Interlochen Arts Academy in Traverse City, Michigan.
We are fortunate to be able to welcome this talented Christian musician to direct our Chancel Choir, lead our music program and guide First Presbyterian as we build an outreach with music.
