MISSION MINISTRY TEAM MINUTES
August 12, 2008

Moderator Tommy Matkin opened the meeting with prayer at 7:10 p.m.

PRESENT: Tommy Matkin, Dutch Matkin, Robert McPherson, Alex Burr, Bruce Pearson, Rosemary Maddox, Clint Woodward, and Bob Taylor

GUESTS: Ann Blakeley, member of First Presbyterian Church, and Judy Kemper, member of Sonoma Springs Presbyterian Church

 1. Ann Blakely and Judy Kemper visited our meeting to ask for our help in setting up an after-services presentation about their mission trip to Juarez last April. Twenty-two people from all parts of the country went on the trip, the purpose of which was to learn about the Synod program "Beyond Borders, Focus on Immigration." They would like to do this September 28, if possible,  because Julia Thorne, Immigration Counselor from PCUSA Louisville, will be in the area on that date and she would take part in the presentation.

Ann would introduce Ms. Thorne, who would then speak at the "Minute for Mission." Ann and Judy propose that the three of them would give an approximately one-hour presentation in the library immediately after services; however, Ann said they were flexible about the time. She plans to write an article for "The Lantern" two or three weeks prior to the date.

It was MOVED by Robert McPherson and SECONDED by Clint Woodward, THAT we set up a Minute for Missions" and an after Fellowship gathering, on September 28 if possible, for a presentation on "Beyond Our Borders" and immigration problems. THE MOTION CARRIED by unanimous vote. Tommy will check on the availability of the date.

  2. Approval of Minutes: The minutes of the July 8 meeting were approved as published.

 3. Correspondence: Distributed. No action taken on new requests for financial support. Alex pointed out that in the current "Presbyterian Today," Sierra  Blanca is mentioned in the top category of Presbytery giving.

 4. Pontiers' Visit: Alex put a special section about the Pontiers on the website, and there are approximately five hits per day on that section.

 5. Old Business: Lodging for the St. Anthony's Church Mission Team will be provided by the McPhersons and a few others when they come to work on the water system in Mesquite.

 6. Special Offerings: The Peacekeeping Offering materials have arrived for the October 5 collection, with a "Minute for Missions" on September 21st. Clint volunteered to speak from the pulpit.

 7. Mission Directory: Bob asked all Mission Ministry Team members to get new pictures and job descriptions from their assigned missionaries. A deadline was set for November.

 8. Bruce has a DVD of the TV program "Beyond the Clouds" starring Kim Lytton, which will be available to anyone who wants to view it. The Matkins have it now.

 9. Adjournment: The meeting was closed with prayer by Clint Woodward at 8:10 p.m.
