MISSION MINISTRY TEAM MINUTES

November 11, 2008

The meeting was opened with prayer by the Moderator at 7:05 p.m.

 PRESENT: Tommy Matkin, Moderator; Dutch Matkin, Bob Taylor, Robert McPerson, Rosemary Maddox, Bruce Pearson, and a guest, Tyler Savage.

 EXCUSED ABSENCES: Alex Burr, Clint Woodward

 PRESENTATION BY TYLER SAVAGE: Tyler is a graduate of Moody Bible Institute and is associated with Church Resource Ministries, a non-denominational missionary organization based in Anaheim, CA. He lived and worked with this organization in Germany for a three-month period, and is seeking financial assistance to return to Germany to continue the work. He is asking for a one-year commitment.

 The focus of CRM is to recruit and mentor leaders for the church in Germany. He will be located in Karlsruhe, a college town near the French border, and the target group will be young people. Tyler needs $4,200 a month in support, which would cover salary, housing, health care benefits, etc. He has gotten commitments of 50% of that amount. He hopes to leave for Germany shortly after the first of the year.

 Tyler's grandfather was a long-time member of the Missions Ministry Team, and his mother sometimes plays violin for FPC services.

 APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the October 14 meeting were approved as published.

 REPORTS ON CORRESPONDENCE: See No. 2 under OLD BUSINESS

 OLD BUSINESS:

            1. Peacemaking Offering: It was agreed that our share of the offering, amount unknown, be given to Cristo Rey.

            2. New Missions Directory: Correspondence from our missionaries/benevolent organizations in response to our request for  information regarding changes in vocational or financial situations was presented and discussed. Not all missionaries have responded to date. Bruce volunteered to edit the new Missions Directory, which will be a 2009 project.

            3. Christmas Joy Offering: Supplies have been received. It was agreed that a speaker from the Missions Ministry Team would not be needed as Pastor Story will no doubt speak about the offering.

 NEW BUSINESS:

            1.  2009 Budget: The 2009 Proposed Budget to be presented at the November Session Meeting was discussed. Under General Assembly: The Carricks, who were in Japan, have returned to the US where he is pastoring a church, thus freeing up $2,500. Under Local Missions: Oscar and Candis Avalos-Campus Crusade, who have been receiving $500 annually, are likewise being dropped. All other financial commitments will remain the same as the preceding year, as shown on our Proposed Budget which will be presented to Session and a copy of which is filed with these minutes. If we receive the same amount as last year from Session, $5l,500, it was proposed that the freed-up funds be divided among the remaining missionaries/benevolent organizations .

            Robert asked Tyler Savage's request  be considered. The granting of funds to non-denominational organizations was discussed. No action was taken.

            2. Missions Prayer List: Tommy will give Linda a revised Missions Prayer List for use in the Bulletin.

            3. Bob asked for ideas about articles for The Lantern. Bruce suggested an article about problems missionaries face in their every day life and agreed to write it.

            4. Answer to the two questions posed  to all committees by Pastor Story: We agreed that God is continually calling our church, through our committee, to fulfill Christ's Great Commission to spread His word throughout the world. God is working through our congregation's financial support of various mission activities and through our committee's contact with, and encouragement of, the missionaries whom we support.

 ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned with prayer at 8:50 p.m.
