MISSIONS MINISTRY TEAM MINUTES
FEBRUARY 10, 2009
Present: Alex Burr, Janice Sherman, Jacque Parks, Rosemary Maddox, Blaine Goss, and Bob Taylor.
Absent: Clint Woodward
The meeting was opened with prayer by Moderator Alex Burr at 7:04 p.m.
The minutes of the January 13 meeting were approved.
1. Elders Retreat: Alex said the Elders expressed concern that no activities in the church should fall between committees or overlap, and that any coordination problems be smoothed out. They asked what this Team considers to be its purpose; this is laid out in detail in our Mission Statement.
Our budget was approved as submitted. The elimination of the Carricks and the Avaloses, who have left the mission field, made possible a 5% increase to the remaining missionaries without increasing our budget.
2. Mission Trips: We recently received a package of materials from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance regarding a camp in New Orleans which provides a place to eat and sleep, at a cost of about $30 a day, for church groups who come to help rebuild churches devastated by Hurricane Katrina. They have a special week set up for families (June 14-20) and one for fathers and sons (June 21-27). This material will be given to Tommy Matkin, who has expressed interest in trying to arrange mission trips of this nature.
3. The Trudells' Visit: Joel Trudell will fill the pulpit on February 22, but because of the Congregational Meeting on that day, the after-worship presentation and lunch with the Mission Team has been postponed to the following Sunday,
March 1. They will visit the Youth Sunday School Class and Salt & Light, but have not been asked to address these groups. On March 1 they will speak to the Adult Sunday School Class.
Arrangements have been made to pick the Trudells up at the airport on February 21. Transportation and lodging will be provided, and they are scheduled to have lunch and/or dinner throughout the week with several members of the congregation and Rev. Story.
4. Local Mission Projects: Jacque asked if local projects, similar to the play yard built by Rotarians for El Jardín de los Niños, were discussed at the Elders Retreat. The answer was no, but Rev. Story has mentioned interest in such projects. The Team would welcome any suggestions.
It was mentioned that mostly somewhat older members of the congregation have participated in past mission projects, and that Pastor Story would like to see young families in their 30's and 40's get involved.
5. Lantern Articles: Bob said he feels we should have an article each month in The Lantern, stating the articles should emphasize the missionaries that we support. He agreed to write one for March. World Day of Prayer, May 7, was suggested as a topic for a future article.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned with prayer by Alex at 7:40 p.m.
