MISSIONS MINISTRY TEAM MINUTES

Minutes of June 9, 209 Meeting

 The meeting was opened with prayer by Moderator Alex Burr at 7:00 p.m.

 PRESENT: Alex Burr, Bob Taylor, Blaine Goss, Jacque Parks, Rosemary Maddox, and Janice Sherman.

 APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the May 12, 2009 minutes were approved by acclamation.

 DISTRIBUTION OF CORRESPONDENCE: Correspondence received was distributed to the appropriate Team members.

 PRISCILLA SCHOOL DIFFICULTY: A communication was received from Priscilla Bible School in Mérida, Mexico, advising that due to changes in the banking system they had been unable to cash checks sent to them from First Presbyterian. They gave instructions on how the checks should now be made out; this was worked out with the office and the reissued checks are on their way.

 PENTECOST OFFERING DISTRIBUTION: Approximately $1,000 was collected in the special offering on Pentecost Sunday, but the final count has not been made. Forty-five percent of this offering will stay here, and the Team will make a decision as to the distribution of these funds at the July meeting. 

 DISCUSSION OF LOCAL MISSIONS: Janice was asked by someone in the congregation about our support of local missions. She said there are lots of people in the church who have no idea whom we support.  Ways we try to keep the congregation apprised of the mission projects and missionaries we support was discussed, including posting our Minutes in the hallway, posting incoming mail on the Mission bulletin board, publishing articles entitled "Beyond Our Walls" in the Lantern, and the currently underway updating of the Missions Directory.

 Concerning the Soldwisches who recently retired from their mission in Mexico, our contribution to their support will continue the rest of the budget term to help with relocation expenses. No money has ever been allocated to retired missionaries. The matter of adding other local missions in addition to the currently supported Gospel Rescue Mission and St. Luke's Health Center will be considered in November during the budget review.

 The Deacons have agreed to take over the food basket donations to Casa de Peregrinos, and will encourage increased participation in this project. 

 FELLOWSHIP TIME JULY 12: It was agreed that Blaine and Janice will set up, Alex and Rosemary will serve, and everybody will help clean up.

 PEACEMAKING OFFERING OCTOBER 4 - WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY: Someone needs to do a Minute for Missions. This will be a matter on the July agenda.

 JULY MEETING: The fact that the Session and some teams do not meet in July was discussed; however it was decided that the Mission Team will meet as usual as there is still much work to do on the Missions Directory.

 ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was closed with prayer by Alex at 8:30 p.m.
