MISSIONS MINISTRY TEAM MINUTES

MISSION MINISTRY TEAM

Minutes of September 8, 2009 Meeting

Moderator Alex Burr opened the meeting with prayer at 7:00 p.m.

PRESENT: Alex Burr, Blaine Goss, Janice Sherman, Jacque Parks, Rosemary Maddox, Lloyd Kirschenman, and one guest, Rev. David Sallee.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the August 11th meeting were approved as published.

 DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNICATIONS: None received.

BRIDGE MINISTRIES REPORT: Rev. Sallee distributed a Bridge Ministries Annual Report dated March 2009 which states: "David Sallee will be continuing as Executive Director and Pastor of the Bridge Ministries, but will end his role as Campus Pastor for New Mexico State University at the end of this Semester." He stated that this change in status was due to two factors: Lack of Campus Ministry participation by students (down from 250-300 in the year 2000 to 38 last year), and the necessity for him to put more and more of his time into income-generating activities.

A BMI Income By Source 1945-2010 graph shows that funding from the Presbytery increased from 1945 to 1995 and has decreased each year since. In 1995 BMI received $47,000, last year $15,000, and next year probably between $5,000 and $10,000.

Individual donations are usually about $20,000 per year but are decreasing because of the economy. BMI receives funding from First Presbyterian, Sonoma Springs Presbyterian, United Church of Los Alamos, and occasionally Dexter-Hagerman and Carlsbad. Rev. Sallee said at present BMI has about $15,000 in the bank.

Rev. Sallee does bookkeeping for Dona Aņa Action for Youth, Sonoma Springs Presbyterian, Cristo Rey, and Gospel Rescue Mission under a contract with The Bridge.

Under the auspices of Southern New Mexico Ministries he has counseled 150 people this year; 95% of whom are paying clients. There are two other therapists; he will propose to the board that two more therapists be retained. He feels that five therapists could generate enough money to pay the overhead. He also does counseling for ten or fifteen adolescents. The funds from this activity (last year about $3,000) is paid directly to The Bridge.

Rev. Sallee would like to bring the Board up from its present 12 members to 20, and to get the Board involved in fundraising. He said more involvement is needed in the churches to keep young people from dropping out before they get to NMSU.  BMI gets fewer names from churches each year.

Rev. Sallee expressed appreciation to First Presbyterian Church for its support over the years, and he prays that FPC will continue to support The Bridge Ministries both financially and with prayers, and with more board members.

VISIT BY MISSIONARY CAROL FUJII:  Ms. Fujii on is leave from Thailand and will be at Presbytery at the end of the month. She will be here speak to Salt and Light on Wednesday, September 30th. Alex has made an appointment with her for 3:00 p.m. on that date, and anyone who would like to visit with her is welcome. He will put out a notice with details later.

MISSIONS BOOKLET: Bruce Pearson has no immediate need for more information to go forward with the booklet.

CONTACTS WITH ASSIGNED MISSIONARIES: Jacque has heard from the Waguespacks in Mexico City; they may be here later this year. She also has heard from the Pontiers in Kenya. No other contacts were reported.

The meeting was closed with prayer at 7:50 p.m.
