MISSION MINISTRY TEAM
Minutes of February 9, 2010 Meeting
The meeting was opened with prayer at 7:00 p.m.
PRESENT: Moderator Alex Burr, Richard Paul, Lloyd Kirschenmann, Janice Sherman, Rosemary Maddox, Bob Taylor, and new Mission Team member Doris Silva.
DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNICATIONS: Copies of "Mission Frontiers" magazine were made available to team members.
PASOS DE FE PROGRAM: At the recent Presbytery meeting Alex met Amy Robinson, who heads up Pasos de Fe. She is based in El Paso and is willing to come to our church to talk about this mission. It was decided that Alex should follow up on this, and that Sunday, May 16th, when the Mission Team hosts fellowship hour, would be a good day to have her speak to us.
ANNUAL REPORT: Alex will prepare this report in the coming week for presentation on February 28th. One of our goals for this year is completion of the revision of the Mission Booklet and its distribution. Lloyd suggested we might look for local areas where we could be of help. Another goal would be making the congregation more aware of the involvement of the church with local missions. The fact that the budget cut was responsible for withdrawing financial support for the Campus Ministry will be included.
PEACEMAKING SEMINAR: Alex explained that we trying to create a seminar with Protestant, Jewish and Muslim speakers, to discuss the place of their Holy Book in their religion. He has spoken with a representative from the local mosque, and they are agreeable. The local rabbi declined to participate, but Alex has the name of another person from the temple to contact. He will attempt to get the Sun News to publish an article about the seminar, and feels it might be good public relations for our church.
MISSION BOOKLET: Alex asked for and obtained a rough estimate for the printing of the Mission Booklet from Insta-Copy; the estimate was approximately $400.
ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING: The literature has been ordered, and the Sunday School will again work with cardboard banks. Someone from the Mission Team will give a Minute for Missions on March 28th, and Alex will write an article for the Lantern, which will come out just prior to that date.
CRISTO REY: Lloyd, who is on the board of Cristo Rey, said the organization is very short of funds and a decision must be made within the next few months as to whether it can be kept alive. Grants are being sought, but the process takes time. On a brighter note, Robert and Janet McPherson are donating a three-in-one computer/printer/fax machine, which will be invaluable in assisting clients to file their income tax returns.
OTHER ITEMS: Alex reported that the Trudells have asked that their reports no longer be published on the church's email transmissions. Barbara Trudell works for SIL International, an organization dealing with secular topics such as linguistics, translations, etc., as well as Scripture use. Complaints have been made that her reports contain too much about Christianity. This is our loss, because their reports give us a tremendous insight into the work they are doing.
ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned with prayer at 7:45 p.m.
